Fr Mylin Noronha conducted an informative two-day media training session for the novices at Salesian Training Institute, Nashik, focusing on news reporting, feature writing, visual design, photography and photo editing. The sessions were held from 5:15 p.m. to 7 p.m. on October 19 and from 9 a.m. to 12 noon on October 20.
The first session introduced the principles of effective news reporting and feature writing. Fr Noronha explained the differences between the two forms of writing, highlighting their respective purposes, structures and approaches. He also outlined common mistakes to avoid while preparing news reports and features. Informative handouts were provided to help the novices understand and apply the concepts discussed.
The second session focused on the fundamentals of visual communication and design, including user experience (UX), layout, typography, colour selection and the effective capturing of photographs. The novices were introduced to practical photography techniques such as the rule of thirds, leading lines and frame within a frame, learning how these techniques can enhance the composition and visual impact of photographs.
The programme also encouraged the novices to explore media as a means of sharing meaningful stories and communicating ideas effectively. Through the sessions, they gained a better understanding of how accurate reporting, creative design and well-composed photographs contribute to impactful communication. The combination of clear explanations, informative handouts and practical demonstrations made the learning experience engaging and accessible. The training also highlighted the importance of presenting information responsibly, choosing appropriate visuals and maintaining clarity in every form of communication. Such skills are valuable for preparing news reports, documenting institutional events and creating content that informs, inspires and connects with audiences.
The session concluded with a practical demonstration of photo editing using Snapseed. Fr Noronha explained how to adjust various image parameters to improve the quality and presentation of photographs. This hands-on approach enabled the novices to understand how thoughtful editing can enhance an image while maintaining its visual appeal.
The two-day programme provided the novices with valuable insights into the responsible and effective use of media. Commenting on the effectiveness of the course, Novice Aayush said, “I felt that the sessions were presented in a very simple manner, which inspired in me a greater love for media and communication.” By combining theoretical knowledge with practical demonstrations, the sessions equipped the novices with essential communication skills to create clear, engaging and visually appealing content for contemporary media platforms.
