BIS #6078 BGVK WITH TATA POWER PROMOTES 'SRI' PADDY PLANTATION

by Father Nelson Mudaliar for BISMumbai

The Bosco Gramin Vikas Kendra [BGVK] Ahmednagar with the support of its Corporate Social Responsibility [CSR] partner TATA Power Community Development Trust is promoting SRI (System of Rice Intensification) method of paddy plantation at Kadachimet village in Jawahar Taluka of Thane District.

This SRI methodology involves cultivating rice with organic manure. The young seedlings are systematically planted singly at a uniform distance in a square pattern. The soil is kept moist through intermittent irrigation and needs only half as much water needed normally, thus solving the problem of huge amounts of water needed for paddy cultivation. In this way, SRI increases the yield of rice produced through paddy cultivation. Many farmers, 60 of whom have been trained, have benefited from this method. These trained farmers have enthusiastically incorporated this method.

BGVK, through its social field staff in Kadachimet, regularly assesses the farm situation and provides practical solutions to better cultivation. The farmers introduced to chemical-free organic farming, are responding with eagerness, adopting and adapting to these newer agricultural practices.
