by Alphonsa Ohol for BIS Mumbai

The Feast of the Assumption, a day of deep spiritual significance in the Catholic Church, was joyously celebrated at Sacred Heart Parish, Yerwada, on August 15, 2024. This Feast commemorates the belief that the Virgin Mary was taken up into heaven, body and soul, at the end of her earthly life.

The day's celebrations began with a solemn Eucharist at 7 am setting a reverent tone for the day. Following this, masses were conducted in various languages to cater to the diverse community of parishioners, reflecting the inclusive spirit of the parish.

In a special initiative to mark the Golden Jubilee celebration of the Parish a Solemn mass was held at 11:30 am specifically for the elderly and homebound members of the parish. This thoughtful gesture was particularly meaningful, as many senior citizens, due to health and mobility issues, often miss the opportunity to attend church services. The special Mass allowed them to participate in the sacred celebrations, reinforcing the parish’s commitment to inclusivity and care for all its members.

The evening mass was presided over by Fr. Roque Alphonso, the Vicar General of the Poona Diocese accompanied by Fr Michael Fernandes the Parish Priest, Fr  Crispino D'Souza and Fr Alex Carvalho. It was a momentous occasion that set the tone for the jubilee year. The unveiling of the Golden Jubilee Logo was a highlight of the evening. The Jubilee Logo was unveiled by Fr Roque Alphonso

The Catechism students released fifty golden balloons in the sky as they symbolized our collective hopes and dreams.

The theme for the year is "A Family that prays together, stays together" and  based on this theme the Catechism students presented a beautiful dance showcasing their devotion and nurturing of faith in the next generation. This year will be filled with various activities, events, and celebrations that will take place in the Parish, making this jubilee year a memorable one.

Mr John Paul, a Former Corporator, was felicitated by Fr Roque for his contributions to the church, particularly for his assistance in the road construction work around the parish. His efforts have significantly improved access to the church, benefiting the entire community.

The Feast of the Assumption of Our Blessed Virgin Mary at Sacred Heart Parish was a day filled with devotion, community spirit, and reflection on the enduring significance of Mary’s Assumption. It served as a reminder of the importance of faith and the strength of the parish community as they move forward in their journey of faith, especially in this milestone year of their Golden Jubilee.
