BIS #7285 Inauguration of the Feast of Our Lady of Valankanni

by Alphonsa Ohol for BIS Mumbai

On August 29, 2024, Bishop Lourdes Daniel inaugurated the preparations for the upcoming Feast of Our Lady of Valankanni. The ceremony marked the beginning of the nine-day novena in honor of Our Lady.

This year is particularly special for Sacred Heart Parish as it celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Parish alongside the 25th anniversary of the Novena to Our Lady of Valankanni. For 25 years, this novena has been a cornerstone of the community's spiritual life.

As part of the opening ceremony, Bishop Lourdes Daniel solemnly hoisted the flag of Our Lady, a symbol of Mary's importance in the Catholic faith. This act serves as a reminder of Mary's role as the Mother of Jesus. The hoisting of her flag calls the faithful to honor her in this role.

Adding to the festive atmosphere, balloons were released into the sky, and the faithful chanted "Ave Maria" together. Following the flag hoisting, the congregation proceeded to the church for a Eucharistic celebration with Bishop Daniel as the main celebrant, joined by Fr Michael Fernandes and Fr Alex Carvalho as concelebrants.

The Mass began with a dance performance by the school students, trained by teacher Violet. Bishop Daniel delivered a homily centered on the theme, "A Family That Prays Together, Stays Together." In his homily, he emphasized the importance of family prayer, describing it as the foundation of spiritual life and a source of strength for every family. He urged all families to come together in prayer.

Following Communion, Fr Fernandes proposed a vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to Bishop Daniel for his presence despite health concerns. He thanked the Bishop for his dedication and for leading the parish community in this spiritual journey. Fr Fernandes also thanked the decoration team for their work in the church.

The parish community left the church ready to continue their spiritual preparation for the Feast of Our Lady of Valankanni.
