BIS #7520 Ikshana – an Initiative for Special Children

by Michelle Pereira for BIS Mumbai

The Stellar Don Bosco Nerul has launched ‘Ikshana’, an initiative for special children. Born from discussions within our parent support group, ‘Wading through Life’ for children with special needs, Ikshana is a Therapy Care Centre that stands apart. Operated by Don Bosco Prafulta, it is housed within an extensive facility already equipped with an Occupational Therapy lab, counselling and remedial services, career guidance, and assessment facilities. ‘Ikshana’ enhances these offerings with a dedicated Sensory Area tailored to the needs of special children.

The centre provides a structured schedule incorporating occupational therapy, remedial education, vocational training, speech therapy, and one-on-one counselling. Leading this initiative are Ms Wenonah Castellino, Advisor at DBA, and Rev Fr Barnabe D’Souza, Director of DBA.

Addressing parents present at the occasion Ms Vinita Gaikwad, In-Charge of ‘Ikshana’ emphasized the importance of functional skills in fostering independence. The curriculum includes communication skills through group activities, kitchen skills, functional academics, money management, and more. Each child undergoes an initial informal assessment, followed by a personalized development plan created in consultation with experts and parents. Depending on their abilities and interests, children can further develop skills in music, computers, or other areas where they demonstrate progress.

Dr Ramani Kumar, Coordinator at Prafulta, highlighted the role of behaviour modification techniques, emphasizing the importance of praise and reinforcement. Positive reinforcement strengthens desirable behaviours through rewards or positive consequences, while negative reinforcement discourages unwanted behaviours by removing unpleasant stimuli. For younger children, consistent rewards help them understand expectations and encourage appropriate behaviour.

Our guest speaker for the day, Ms Malabika Ghosh, a clinical psychologist and mindfulness expert, led an insightful wellness session on mindfulness. She guided participants on how to manage their thoughts and emotions effectively, transitioning from a state of compulsive reaction to conscious living. The session was well received by all the parents, who appreciated the practical strategies shared for enhancing emotional well-being.

Following this, Ms Wenonah Castellino conducted an engaging Optimistic Mindset Game. Participants were shown various images and encouraged to describe them using positive perspectives. This activity reinforced the power of positive thinking and its impact on happiness, health, and resilience. The parents found the exercise both enjoyable and thought-provoking, appreciating its focus on cultivating a more optimistic outlook.

Overall, the session inspired a shift toward mindful awareness and a brighter, more positive mindset.
