BIS #7430 Building a Community for Parents of Children with Special Needs
By Michelle Pereira for BIS Mumbai
On December 14, 2024, The Stellar Don Bosco Academy, Nerul hosted a meeting for its Support Community for parents of children with special needs. This growing group, launched in October 2024, has rapidly gained momentum as a much-needed initiative for families navigating the unique challenges and joys of raising children with special needs. Spearheaded by Fr Barnabe D’Souza, Director of DBA, and Ms Wenonah Castellino, Advisor, the community also benefits from the expertise of psychologists and counsellors from Don Bosco Prafulta. Adding to this initiative’s strength is the ongoing support of the Rotary Club of Smart City, Vashi.
The December meeting brought together key stakeholders, including Ms Castellino as the convener and main speaker, Mr Kishore, Mr Milind Chandak – President of the Rotary Club, and other Rotary members. The session opened with a prayer song, uniting all attendees in a moment of reflection and gratitude.
Ms Castellino highlighted new and exciting additions to the initiative. The upcoming ‘Mela’ for specially-abled children and their families is planned for January 2025. The event aims to foster inclusivity, create awareness, and provide a platform to showcase the talents and potential of these children and their parents. Collaborators such as the Rotary Club, NGOs, sponsors, celebrities, and volunteers will lend their support to the Mela. Parents eagerly suggested ideas for stalls that could feature handmade items like flowers, soap boxes, and other crafts. A fireless cooking stall, showcasing food prepared by children and parents is in plans.
A key development was the announcement of a daycare center for children with special needs, scheduled to be launched on the feast day of St John Bosco in January 2025. The centre will offer a structured schedule, including occupational therapy, remedial education, vocational training, speech therapy, and one-on-one counselling. Designed as a sensory-friendly space, it will feature a play area, calming room, art and music activities, and a ball pool. This initiative aims to provide holistic care and a nurturing environment for these children while offering peace of mind to their families.
The next session was ‘Heart 2 Heart Connect’, where parents shared their personal experiences. These heartfelt stories of challenges and triumphs helped foster empathy and solidarity among the group. One parent shared how she gave up her career to care for her son, while others emphasized the importance of integrating children with special needs into mainstream activities for societal acceptance. A poignant question resonated throughout the session: “Who will care for my child after me?” To address this critical concern, a dedicated session on future caregiving will be held in the next meeting.
The event also featured inspiring performances by children. Eleven-year-old Avneet beautifully sang the hymn “10,000 Reasons,” impressing everyone with his flawless rendition. Chinmay followed with a karaoke performance, adding to the joyful atmosphere.
The meeting concluded on a festive note, with everyone singing “Jingle Bells” while wearing colorful headbands. It was a heartwarming reminder of the power of community, connection, and shared purpose.
