by Carol Fernandes for BISMumbai
Don Bosco High School, Matunga hosted the Don Bosco Global Youth Film Festival (DBGYFF) on October 25, 2024, providing an enriching experience for students in classes 5, 6, and 7. The festival's theme, "I Have a Dream: Youth and Climate Change – Making Mother Earth Cleaner and Greener," served as both a platform for educating young people about their environmental responsibilities and a showcase for inspiring films.
Ms Reena Christopher led the event, which included lively debates that highlighted how crucial environmental preservation is. Pupils were urged to express their thoughts on how to make the world a greener place and to realize that they are ultimately responsible for the future. This method generated excitement and gave the kids a feeling of pride.
The festival showcased a diverse array of films, including animated short films, music videos and award-winning films that captivated the young audience. Notable films such as "Wake Up" by Aastha Kamble, "A Wake Up Call" by Stuti Patel, "Green Alert" by Mohit Bhoite, "Waste Whisper" by Chitsanupong Laokavong, and "Beard and Bird" by Kristina Kesler effectively conveyed messages about the impact of human behavior on the environment. The vibrant visuals and engaging narratives made sensitive topics accessible and relatable, with the animated films resonating deeply with the children, illustrating environmental challenges in both entertaining and educational ways.
Mrs Lakshmi highlighted the significance of films in fostering environmental awareness among students. She stressed that early education is crucial for developing responsible individuals who comprehend the consequences of their actions. Encouraging students to make environmental concern a habitual practice prompted reflection on how small changes in daily habits could contribute to a healthier planet.
Throughout the event, it became clear that the children were not only absorbing knowledge but also internalizing the significance of their roles as future stewards of the Earth. Discussions focused on practical actions they could take to promote a greener environment, such as reducing waste and conserving water. Their eagerness to implement these ideas demonstrated a growing awareness of their potential to effect change. By bridging the gap between entertainment and environmental consciousness, the Don Bosco Global Youth Film Festival laid the groundwork for a generation committed to sustainability and conservation.
The impact of the session was reflected in student feedback. Agnelo Dsouza from 8A stated, "If we do not begin such initiatives in the coming years, we will face serious environmental consequences."
