BIS #7548 Redeemed By Hope: A Journey of Faith, Reflection and Celebration
by Dorothy Fernandes for BIS Mumbai
The Lenten mission preaching, themed "Redeemed by Hope" (Romans 8:24-25), began from March 23 to March 28 at Mary Help of Christians Parish, Naigaon East. Fr Dominic Martis, the Rector and Parish Priest, extended an invitation to the Redemptorist priests for the Lenten mission preaching.
Prior to the mission, Redemptorist Mission Superior Fr Andrew Dantis, along with Fr Sebastian Kallarackal from Nirmala Mata Church, Umela, Naigaon West, and Fr Savio Fernandes from St. Joseph’s Church Panodi, Ahmednagar, visited parishioners’ homes from March 15 to 22. Their heartfelt, personal visits involved engaging with families, listening to their stories, and understanding their spiritual needs. They shared the mission’s purpose, and invited parishioners to bring friends and loved ones, fostering a spirit of inclusivity and community.
Touched by God in a unique way, each priest shared their personal experiences and stories, deeply inspiring and strengthening the faith of those who attended the sessions.
Fr Dantis, a former lawyer, in charge of the migrant missions, embodies a life marked by selflessness and compassion. His unwavering dedication to others is evident through his remarkable act of donating a kidney to his ailing brother, showcasing his profound sense of generosity and heartfelt commitment to family.
Fr Savio, who previously worked in the BPO industry, discovered his true purpose in life through his calling from God. As he stepped away from his past career, he was filled with a multitude of questions, but in his journey of faith, he found profound answers that brought him deep fulfilment and a renewed sense of purpose.
Fr Sebastin faced a life-threatening pancreatic attack, with doctors losing hope. However, while in the ICU, he experienced a profound encounter with the word of God, which transformed his life. This divine moment inspired him to embrace God's call and dedicate himself to His mission.
The preachers celebrated Holy Mass daily, delivering inspiring homilies that deepened parishioners' faith and encouraged personal reflection. They were available for confession before and after Mass, offering a sacred space for reconciliation and spiritual renewal. Each evening began with a spiritually enriching experience for all parishioners, deepening their relationship with God’s love. Centered around the theme ‘Redeemed by Hope,’ the mission was divided into daily themes, beginning with a powerful Bible enthronement titled ‘Experience God’s Love.’ Each day explored essential aspects of faith, including Church unity, the transformative power of reconciliation, the significance of trust and forgiveness in marriage, the need to strengthen family bonds in a digital age, and the journey of inner healing through the Way of the Cross.
Parish council members and collaborators played a key role in the mission’s success, offering dedicated support. Lively, melodic singing by various groups added joy and reverence.
The preachers were deeply moved by the parishioners' enthusiastic participation, noting the large turnout and active engagement.
The Rector, Fr Dominic Martis shared that Lenten mission preaching was a truly special occasion, marking not only a time of spiritual renewal but also serving as a heartfelt celebration of the parish’s Silver Jubilee. It was a meaningful event that brought the community together to reflect on and give thanks to God for 25 years of faith, love, and unity within the parish.
