BIS #7551 Wading Through Life - Funtoosh Summer Camp at DBA Nerul
by Michelle Pereira for BIS Mumbai
The Stellar Don Bosco Nerul has launched an inspiring initiative for children with special needs—a month-long Summer Camp, inaugurated on April 1, 2025. This unique program is an extension of ‘Wading through Life,’ a series of initiatives designed to support children with special needs and their families. Following the success of the Support Group meetings and Funtoosh playdates, the latest addition, Wading Through Life’s - Funtoosh – Summer Camp, aims to offer an engaging and inclusive sporting experience.
The Vision Behind the Camp
Sports have long been recognized for their ability to enhance social skills, boost self-esteem, and foster independence and teamwork. The idea for the camp emerged when Don Bosco Academy (DBA) was planning its Summer Camp, prompting the thought: why not create a similar opportunity for our Funtoosh friends? This vision quickly gained traction, and with enthusiastic parental support, the first batch of 14 children was formed.
Structured Planning and Expert Guidance
The camp’s meticulous planning was spearheaded by Ms Wenonah Castellino, Advisor at DBA, with the strong backing of Fr Barnabe Dsouza, Mr Rory Fernandes (Sports Incharge), and Basketball Coach Mr Rohan Borkar. To ensure a tailored experience, participants were divided into two groups based on age: 4-9 years and 10 years and above. Two sports—football and basketball—were carefully selected to introduce the children to structured physical activity. To avoid overwhelming them with rules, each sport is taught on alternate days, allowing them to develop skills in both disciplines progressively.
A Joyful Start to the Camp
The camp commenced with a warm welcome for both parents and children at the basketball court. Fr Dsouza led a short prayer and an introductory session, setting a positive tone for the day. The first activity involved shooting the basketball into the hoop, a simple yet engaging way to build confidence and participation. The children eagerly took turns, dribbled, ran, and enjoyed the game in the comforting presence of familiar faces. Their excitement was mirrored by their parents, who watched proudly from the sidelines.
The coaches played a pivotal role in ensuring inclusivity, patiently guiding and encouraging each child. While some children initially hesitated, they soon overcame their shyness and actively engaged in the game.
Every initiative undertaken by the Funtoosh program involves careful thought and planning, but the radiant smiles and sheer joy of the children make all efforts worthwhile. Many of the participants displayed remarkable natural talent, with some quickly taking the lead in the game. A little encouragement and support were all they needed to shine.
The Funtoosh Summer Camp is not just about sports; it is about creating a space where children with special needs can thrive, grow, and build confidence. With this initiative, Stellar Don Bosco Nerul continues to pave the way for inclusivity, proving that with the right opportunities, every child can soar.
