BIS #7328 Eco-Canticles: A Celebration of Creation

On September 21, 2024, the Salesian Youth Movement Mumbai, in collaboration with the Archdiocesan Office for Environment, Mumbai, hosted "Eco-Canticles" at Don Bosco Matunga. It aimed to celebrate the season of creation through drama, music, and dance. Drawing over 300 attendees, the event also welcomed esteemed guests who came to witness the event.
The program commenced with a prayer song on the Season of Creation by Prince George, followed by a mesmerizing play titled "The Canticles of Creation," performed by Metamorphosis Theatre and Films. The play depicted the life of St. Francis of Assisi, a renowned lover of animals and nature. Leaving the audience deeply moved by the portrayal of St. Francis's life and his connection to the natural world.
Following the play, Apostolic Nuncio to India, Archbishop Leopoldo Girelli, addressed the audience, highlighting the essential role of God in creation and the urgent need for individuals to adopt a more sustainable lifestyle. His excellency underlined the importance of practicing ‘human ecology’ where respect for nature reflects our love for God, as the poor bear the greatest burden of environmental degradation.
Cardinal Oswald Gracias also addressed the gathering, expressing his passion for environmental conservation. He stressed the urgent need for personal and communal ecological conversion and highlighted the growing importance of the Season of Creation within the Catholic Church. His Eminence concluded his speech by reminding everyone of our God-given responsibility to care for the Earth, the poor, and future generations.
The event featured a variety of performances, including a dance by Canossa Special School, Mahim, emphasizing the importance of preserving trees. Poems were recited by Shonel and Janet D'Souza, focusing on the themes of ‘Demystifying Creation’ and ‘Less is More’. The event also showcased beautiful musical performances by St. Cecilia's Choir and Paranjoti Academy Chorus, whose melodious songs captivated the audience.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Shawna Rebello and blessing from Bishop Allwyn D'Silva. A token of appreciation was presented to the participants and performers.
Overall, Eco-Canticles was a successful event that got people of different age groups to celebrate the season of creation and raise awareness about environmental issues. With all the performances, the event inspired individuals to take action toward a more sustainable future.
