Don Bosco Development Services (DBDS), Nerul organised a Graduation Day for the tailoring students of its Skilling Unit on July 29, 2024. DBDS holds regular classes in tailoring and beauty care for ladies of the migrant community at their campus. Over the years many ladies have benefited from these courses. The courses are offered both at the Don Bosco Nerul premises and in community centres and serve various migrant communities between Mankhurd, Navi Mumbai and Panvel. The comprehensive courses cover theoretical, practical, journal-keeping, and personality development components, culminating in the awarding of certificates and accolades to acknowledge the participants' accomplishments.

Around 12 students received their certificates at the ceremony. The guests at the event included, Fr Barnabe D’souza – Director of Don Bosco Academy, Nerul (DBA), Fr Shekhar Mariadas - Asst Director at DBA, Ms Wenonah Castellino - Image Coach and Advisor to DBA, Mr Mathew George – Coordinator Social Services, Ms Assumption George – Incharge of evening oratory and Mr Noel Saldanha – Coordinator for the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) The proceedings commenced with a prayer.

The mission of the social services unit is to empower women through comprehensive vocational training. Upon arriving at our office, they receive personalized counselling and guidance to explore various available options. The program not only offers training in tailoring but also provides continuous support to help them achieve independence and establish their own home-based businesses.

Speaking on the occasion Fr. D’souza emphasised the need to include new skills like soft toy making into the course. The participants shared their personal experiences at Don Bosco Nerul during the event. Ms. Seema Khan, a student, expressed her gratitude, saying, “I am thankful for the encouragement and guidance I received here. It has enabled me to achieve financial independence.” Another student Monica shared her happiness at becoming financially independent by taking on stitching orders. Teacher Shaista added that they can now confidently create those designs they couldn't make before, thanks to the confidence given to them by the course. Similar tales of perseverance and triumph were shared by many others, reflecting an unwavering spirit to overcome challenges.

Reflecting its commitment to uplift the underprivileged women in the vicinity, DBA, Nerul remains dedicated to providing skill development opportunities. The Academy offers courses in tailoring, beauty, computer skills and bags making, complemented by adult literacy programs, financial literacy initiatives, and awareness programs covering medical and social issues. This holistic approach underscores the Academy’s mission to empower and enhance the lives of women in the community, fostering both personal growth and social well-being.
