BIS #6972  Understanding Liturgy Better

By Fr Renold Lemos

On 9 July 2023, a thought-provoking session on liturgical animation and the significance of the Eucharist in Parish life was conducted at Jyoti Mata Church, Jyoti.  Fr Alwyn Tuscano, who is in charge of Liturgical Animation for the Diocese of Vasai, was the resource person for the event.

Despite the pandemic being over, it was noticed that the parishioners had not yet returned in full attendance for the Eucharistic celebrations at church. Recognising this challenge, the session was specially organised for the leaders within the community to find ways to reignite interest and encourage the faithful to come back to church.  The main aim of the session was to enhance, especially for the leaders in the parish,  a genuine awareness and understanding of the prayers, rituals, and symbols involved in the Eucharistic celebration.

Fr William Falcao, the Parish Priest, warmly welcomed the speaker and the attendees. This session was attended by nearly 35 members, comprising of the Parish Pastoral Council (PPC), catechists, lectors, and musicians.

Fr Tuscano underscored the importance of full, active, and conscious participation in the Eucharist. He encouraged the participants to engage in the liturgy with their entire being, actively involving their minds, hearts, and bodies. Active involvement in singing, responding to prayers, and immersing oneself in the readings were emphasised as essential components of liturgical animation. Practical tips were shared to ensure a well-prepared and meaningful liturgical celebration. Fr Tuscano emphasised the importance of proper planning and coordination among the celebrant, lectors, musicians, and other liturgical ministers. Attention was given to selecting appropriate hymns, readings, and prayers that resonate with the liturgical season and the theme of the celebration. Additionally, he highlighted the significance of proper training for lectors and the need for their clear and articulate proclamation of the Word of God. The practical tips provided valuable insights into the proper preparation and execution of the liturgy.

The central theme of the session revolved around the transformative power of the Eucharist in individual lives. Participants were encouraged to approach the Eucharist with reverence, humility, and a deep sense of gratitude for the gift of Christ’s presence. The question-answer session provided an opportunity for the participants to engage further with the topic and seek clarifications on areas that required more understanding. Fr Tuscano graciously responded to the queries, providing additional insights and perspectives.

Each attendee took responsibility for reaching out to the people within their respective zones and motivating them to reconnect with the spiritual nourishment provided by the Eucharist. Towards the session's conclusion, a vote of thanks was extended to Fr Tuscano for his profound insights, practical tips, and dedication to enlightening the participants.
