BIS #7047 INB SYM Zonal Leaders Meet at Matunga
By Ms Marilyn Pereira for BISMumbai
The Salesian Youth Movement (SYM) Zonal Leaders Meeting brought together vibrant leaders from the regions of Gujarat, Nashik, Ahmednagar, Pune, and Mumbai. Held at the DBYS Matunga on 2 and 3 September 2023, this gathering was attended by 18 young and dynamic individuals.
The event began with the Holy Eucharist presided over by Fr Leon Cruz Ratinam, the Province Youth Ministry Delegate. An icebreaker led by Cl. Melton Suraes followed, creating an atmosphere of camaraderie as participants introduced themselves and their peers. A series of team-building activities further strengthened the bonds formed.
Br Aliester D’Souza delivered an enlightening session on leadership, emphasising how they are chosen to lead themselves and the youth under their care towards a deeper connection with God, just as Don Bosco wanted. Sr Jennifer Macwan delved into the qualities of a good leader, not only highlighting them but also demonstrating them through engaging activities. She stressed that good leaders are not just effective communicators but also active listeners, creative thinkers, and exemplars of the path they chart. Even when differing opinions arise, leaders must ensure that the ultimate goal is achieved.
Participants shared various events conducted in their regions, and this exchange revealed diverse ways to engage youth in spiritual growth while fostering fun and enjoyment within the Church community. These exchanges not only inspired the incorporation of more fun activities but also served as a catalyst for brainstorming and planning forthcoming events.
The day concluded with a visit to Bandra, where participants enjoyed street shopping, explored churches, and strolled along the picturesque streets en route to the Basilica of Mount Mary, where they spent time in prayer. The day ended with the screening of ‘Invictus’, a film portraying Nelson Mandela's leadership and how leaders can drive significant change.
On the following day, the group embarked on a fascinating journey to the Archdiocese Of Mumbai Heritage Museum. Led by the guide, Ms Joynel Fernandes, they delved into a rich collection of artefacts and church relics, gaining insight into the Church's evolution while remaining steadfast in upholding Gospel values throughout the years. This immersive three-hour tour deeply impacted everyone, highlighting the significance of various Catholic symbols. The visit underscored the importance of being well-versed in the truths of the Catholic faith.
Returning to Don Bosco Matunga, the leaders spent time in reflection and making commitments. The Holy Eucharist, celebrated by Fr Leon Cruz and accompanied by a beautiful homily by Dn Nathaneal George, reinforced the notion that leaders face challenges and temptations. By deepening their personal relationship with Christ, they can overcome these trials.
The two-day leadership meeting thus came to a close, leaving participants zealous and eager to serve their ecclesial communities.
