BIS 7482 Salesian Parents’ Day Celebration at Jyoti

by Fr Renold Lemos for BIS Mumbai

In commemoration of Mamma Margaret, the mother of Don Bosco, the Annual Salesian Parents’ Day was held on February 2, 2025, at Jyoti Mata Church, Jyoti. This special gathering brought together 202 parents and relatives of Salesians from the Vasai-Virar-Uttan region, along with 13 Salesians, in a joyful celebration of gratitude and fraternity.

The event began with a solemn Eucharistic celebration at 10:00 am, presided over by Fr Agnel Dias, with several Salesians as concelebrants. The homily was preached by Fr Selvin D’mello, who beautifully reflected on the deep and inspiring relationship between Don Bosco and his mother, Mamma Margaret. He highlighted how her sacrifices, wisdom, and faith played a pivotal role in shaping Don Bosco’s mission and emphasized how, similarly, the sacrifices and prayers of parents today have paved the way for their sons to become Salesians.

Following the Mass, the celebration continued in the parish hall, with Fr. Renold Lemos leading the event. Fr Anaclet D’mello – Priest in charge at Jyoti, extended a heartfelt welcome to all on behalf of Fr Savio Silveira- the Provincial Mumbai Province, expressing gratitude for their presence and emphasizing the significance of parents in the Salesian Family. A special felicitation ceremony was held to honor the newly ordained priests, Fr. Agnel Dias and Fr Selvin D’mello, along with their parents. A strong appeal was made to all present to promote vocations within their neighbourhood and parishes, ensuring that the Salesian mission continues to flourish. The event also featured a unique and touching moment where the parents of each Salesian present were called on stage to introduce their Salesian son- sharing his name, current place of ministry, and years of service as a priest or brother. This interactive segment brought smiles, pride, and a sense of belonging to the Salesian Family.

To add to the joy of the occasion, various engaging activities were organized. Spot prizes, children’s games, musical chairs for men, and newspaper dance for the ladies created an atmosphere of fun and laughter. Exciting prizes were awarded to the winners. The celebration was further enriched with a delightful homemade meal prepared by the Women’s Sodality of Jyoti Mata Church. The food was appreciated for its taste and warmth. As lunch was served, many attendees spontaneously joined in traditional Vasai dances, expressing their joy for being part of this special day. As a token of appreciation, each family present received a souvenir, making the occasion a cherished memory. Many parents shared a deep sense of joy and gratitude for the celebration. Mrs Rekha Menezes, the mother of Novice Rex Menezes, expressed, “This is our first time attending Salesian Parents Day, and my family and I feel truly blessed to be part of such a joyful and welcoming Salesian community. It gives me great joy to know that my son is surrounded by such wonderful Salesians who support and encourage him.”

The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Fr Lemos, who expressed appreciation to all who contributed to making the day a success. Indeed, the celebration was a heartfelt tribute to the love, sacrifice, and faith of parents, who continue to be pillars of strength in their son’s journey of serving God and the young.
