by Amarr Prabhu for BIS Mumbai

The valedictory ceremony for the MGL Hunar Gas Pipeline Fitter Skill Enhancement Program, a significant initiative aimed at empowering individuals, was held on February 20, 2025. This training imparted valuable skills to trainees, including welding, soldering, gas meter installation, inspection, and allied skills related to CNG and PNG work, totaling 240 hours. This momentous occasion celebrated the successful completion of the course by a batch of thirty trainees, which included three inspiring women.

The ceremony took place at Don Bosco ITI, Kurla, and was attended by several distinguished guests, underscoring the importance of this collaborative effort between Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) and Don Bosco. Mr Ramakrishnan Lakshmanan (Rohit), the host, warmly welcomed the esteemed dignitaries and attendees. Among the notable guests were Mr Chakrapani Atmakur, VP of HR and CSR at MGL; Fr Anthony Pint, Rector-Director of DBCL; Fr George Miranda, Executive Director of Don Bosco Development Society; Ms Priyanka Dalvi, Assistant Manager of CSR at MGL; Mr Amarr Prabhu, Principal of Don Bosco ITI, Kurla; and Mr Mahesh Kumar from the Don Bosco Development Society. Their presence highlighted the commitment of both organizations to skill development and community empowerment.

The ceremony commenced with the traditional lighting of the ceremonial lamp. Following this, Fr Anthony Pinto delivered an inspiring opening address, expressing his happiness at the participation of women in a field typically associated with men. He shared anecdotes from his experiences at other Don Bosco institutions, advocating for co-education and emphasizing the potential of women in technical trades. He underscored the importance of such initiatives in empowering women and providing equal opportunities, wishing the graduating trainees a successful and fulfilling future.

A highlight of the ceremony was the sharing of experiences by the trainees. Ms Rasika, Ms Ankita, and Mr Yogesh, representing their class, shared how the MGL Hunar program transformed their lives. Coming from diverse backgrounds, including Dharavi, they spoke passionately about how the program equipped them with technical skills and instilled self-belief and confidence. They expressed deep gratitude to Don Bosco, particularly Mr Amarr, and the dedicated instructors – Mr Sunny, Mr Suhas, Mr Osmond, and Mr Walter. Their testimonials powerfully illustrated the program's impact and the dedication of the faculty.

The culmination of the trainees' hard work was recognized with the distribution of certificates by the dignitaries amid thunderous applause. Following this, Ms Priyanka Dalvi addressed the gathering, commending the quality of training provided by DBITI Kurla and expressing her hope that the program would continue to benefit aspiring gas pipeline fitters.

Mr Chakrapani Atmakur, the chief guest, delivered a thought-provoking address emphasizing continuous learning and adaptability in a rapidly changing world. He highlighted the demand for skilled workers in countries like Germany, where language proficiency is essential for employment. He also stressed the importance of professional conduct, discipline, and punctuality, qualities crucial for success in any career. He concluded his remarks by thanking all those who contributed to the program's success.

The final segment included a pleasant surprise when Mr Amarr Prabhu introduced Mr Niazi, who had conducted interviews for the trainees. Seventeen trainees participated, and eleven were selected for employment, including all three women as supervisors. Mr Niazi handed over the appointment letters to the delighted trainees, adding a tangible dimension to the celebration. Mr Amarr then delivered the vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to the dignitaries, faculty, and trainees for their contributions to the event's success. He reminded graduates of the "3L" principle practiced at DBITI: lifelong learning, encouraging them to embrace this philosophy. The ceremony concluded with a sense of accomplishment and optimism, marking the beginning of a new chapter for the graduates.
