BIS #7493 Pre-Regency Scholastics Attend First-Ever Youth Ministry Workshop

by Fr Ian Doulton for BIS Mumbai

On Sunday, February 9, the third-year Bachelor of Philosophy (B.Ph) students gathered at the Don Bosco Youth Centre (DBYC) for a transformative Pre-Regency Programme. This event marked a significant milestone, as it was the first of a new series of workshops designed specifically for youth ministers—a fresh initiative in DBYC’s renewed mission.

The 18 participants, a dynamic and eager group, were guided by an experienced resource team comprising Fr Ian Doulton, Fr Joyston Machado, and Br Aliester. The sessions, particularly “The Teenage Mind” and “Understanding Youth”, provided profound psychological insights, equipping the young scholastics with essential tools for effective ministry. These discussions fostered deep reflection on their evolving role within the Church, making the day both intellectually stimulating and spiritually enriching.

A highlight of the workshop was the engaging discussion on practical cases from parish ministry, which brought theory to life in a tangible way. Participants found this exchange invigorating, as it allowed them to grapple with real-world challenges and refine their pastoral approaches. The theme of “Accompaniment” resonated deeply, reinforcing the need to first address personal growth before guiding young people.

Recognizing the richness of the content, the participants strongly recommended extending the programme to a two-day format—from Saturday evening through Sunday. This expansion would allow for a deeper exploration of critical topics and provide more time for reflection, discussion, and skill development.

Another key takeaway was the necessity of addressing psycho-sexual integration in the formation of youth ministers. Understanding healthy boundaries and fostering appropriate relationships are crucial for maintaining integrity and authenticity in ministry. Additionally, the session on “Handling Emotions” was particularly insightful, highlighting the need for emotional intelligence when engaging with young people. Participants expressed a keen interest in further exploring this area, especially through practical case studies.

Beyond the structured sessions, the day was filled with moments of fraternity—delicious meals, interactive activities, and stimulating games, particularly enjoyed by participants from the FIBP. The well-organized nature of the workshop, coupled with expertly delivered content, allowed participants to fully immerse themselves without the distraction of excessive note-taking. This facilitated active listening and meaningful reflection on the valuable insights shared.

The meticulous planning and execution of the programme ensured that every aspect—from the content to the delivery—remained engaging and relevant. With this successful launch, DBYC has set a high standard for future workshops, reinforcing its renewed commitment to equipping youth ministers with the skills and knowledge needed to serve effectively in today’s ever-changing pastoral landscape.
