BIS #7137 Republic Day Celebrations at DBHS Matunga
By Ms Bindu Keny for BISMumbai
As the nation commemorated 75 years of being a republic on 26 January 2024, Don Bosco High School, Matunga, celebrated the occasion with patriotic zeal. The symbolic hoisting of the national flag was performed by the Silver Jubilarian, Ms Gracy Gonsalves, who was accompanied by the Rector - Fr Godfrey D’Souza, Fr Orville Coutinho, the Principal - Ms Anita Philip, and the supervisors.
The cultural events began with the singing of the national anthem and included a playlet that awakened the spirit of the Indian Constitution through the act, which illustrated how the constitutional guidelines lead citizens to democratic conduct when they become aware of their rights and duties and actively participate in political processes. A skit titled ‘Citizens for Change’ demonstrated that the smooth functioning of the country can only be ensured when citizens get the constitutional rights they are entitled to, as it highlighted the right to equality, education, and freedom and underscored the need to execute the complementary duties by adhering to the laws.
Zendyn Pereira, one of the students, urged the audience through his speech to reflect upon the ideals that shape the foundation of this great nation, whose strength originates from its vibrant cultural diversity. He reminded the listeners about the sacrifices made by the freedom fighters and their aspirations for a democratic and inclusive India.
The harmonious musical instruments and the joyful dance resonated with the pride of every Indian in the Indian Constitution. The programme was marked with heightened patriotic fervour with every performance.
Fr D’Souza, in his address, urged the gathering to be proud and worthy citizens of the nation and to strive to sustain the democratic spirit by being united, respecting one another and actively contributing to the progress of the nation. He greeted everyone on the occasion and encouraged the students to strive to make India more glorious.
Fr D’Souza also distributed the certificates to the prize winners of the prestigious Boscoree held in 2023 in Guwahati, Assam. The programme concluded with Republic Day greetings to all and a vote of thanks by the Principal.
The participants described their experience of rehearsing for the programme as an exciting one, which gave them an opportunity to hone their speaking skills under the able guidance of their teachers.
