BIS #7305 Journey of Faith: Ahmednagar Faithful Walk to Haregoan
by Fr Ajay D'Monte for BIS Mumbai
From September 12th to 14th, a walking pilgrimage, or Padayatra, unfolded as the faithful from Ahmednagar Parishes embarked on a sacred journey to Haregoan. This annual event draws countless devotees who seek the blessings of our Blessed Mother, and this year was no exception. Led by Frs Vishwas, Richard, Blaise, and Ajay, a group of 250 dedicated pilgrims set out with hope and reverence.
The pilgrimage began at the break of dawn from Don Bosco Savedi at 6:00 am. As the group set out, their journey was accompanied by the uplifting sounds of hymns and bhajans dedicated to our Blessed Mother. Devotees recited rosaries and stopped at various points along the route to offer garlands and flowers in tribute. The generosity of many local sponsors made the journey smoother with breakfast, snacks, and lunch provisions.
The first leg of the journey spanned 45 kilometers from Ahmednagar to Rahuri Factory. Upon arrival at 6:30 pm, the pilgrims were warmly welcomed by Fr Prakesh Raut, the parish priest of Fatima Mata Church. Fr. Raut celebrated the Holy Eucharist with Frs. Vishwas, Richard, Blaise, and Ajay concelebrating. In his homily, Fr. Raut spoke movingly about the deep bond between Jesus and His mother, urging the pilgrims to cultivate a personal and intimate relationship with Mother Mary. The Khandagale family from Fatima Mata Church generously provided a meal for all the pilgrims, enhancing the spirit of community.
The next morning, the pilgrims resumed their journey at 5:30 am. They were graciously hosted by Mrs. Stella at the Pumpkin House, where breakfast and water bottles were provided. By 11:30 am, the group reached Balepur and took a rest at the Sanskriti Wedding Hall. Here, the Balepur village Gram panchayat officers extended a warm welcome and honored the priests. The local villagers also contributed by sponsoring a meal for the pilgrims.
Following lunch, the pilgrims continued their walk towards Shrirampur, arriving in the early afternoon. At their destination, they were received by Fr Prakesh Bhalerao, the parish priest of Loyola Sadan. The evening was spent in joyous bhajan singing that lasted until midnight, filling the air with spiritual fervor.
On the final day, the pilgrims set out at 5:00 am for the last stretch of their journey to Haregoan, just 8 kilometers from Shrirampur. Among the pilgrims was Mrs Paroal Gaikwad, an 82-year-old devoted woman making her 35th pilgrimage. With deep faith, she remarked, “Just as Mary never left Jesus until His death, she will not leave me too.” Her unwavering faith in Mary was a testament to the pilgrimage’s spiritual significance.
Despite the physical challenges—swelling and bruises—the pilgrims were undeterred. The journey was marked by an abundance of prayers and blessings. Not a single person chose to turn back; their collective hope and faith guided them to Haregoan, where they could finally seek the blessings of the Blessed Mother.
This year’s Padayatra was not only a journey of physical distance but also a profound pilgrimage demonstrating the enduring faith and devotion of the Ahmednagar parishes.
