BIS #7230 Workshop on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
by Teachers Anita Surwade, Pushpalata Vind and Zubia Shaikh for BIS Mumbai
Don Bosco Senior Secondary School, Nerul, hosted a transformative workshop focused on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on July 29, 2024. This engaging session was led by AIESEC student volunteers from Pillai’s, SIES, and NMIMS, who brought their expertise and enthusiasm to interact with students from classes V to VIII. The workshop was meticulously designed to enhance students’ understanding of sustainable practices, encourage active participation in environmental conservation, and foster innovative solutions to global sustainability challenges.
The workshop commenced with a comprehensive introduction to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The AIESEC volunteers highlighted the importance and relevance of the SDGs to both global and local environmental and social issues. This foundational segment provided students with a thorough understanding of the principles of sustainable development and the critical role these goals play in contemporary society.
A standout feature of the workshop was the “Sustainable Goal Bingo” game, which made learning about the SDGs both engaging and memorable. This interactive activity allowed students to familiarize themselves with various goals in a fun and educational manner. Following the game, students participated in a reflective exercise where they crafted personal pledges to commit to sustainable practices. These pledges represented both individual and collective commitments to the SDGs, emphasizing the personal responsibility each student holds in achieving these global goals.
Furthermore, the workshop included a hands-on activity where students brainstormed and developed project proposals to address local and global sustainability challenges. This segment was crucial in stimulating creativity and fostering collaborative problem-solving among participants. Students were encouraged to think critically about the issues facing their communities and propose innovative solutions, thereby reinforcing their understanding and commitment to sustainable development.
The workshop successfully met its objectives by deepening students’ understanding of sustainable development, actively involving them in environmental issues, and reinforcing their commitment to sustainability. The enthusiastic participation and innovative proposals generated during the session underscore the effectiveness of the workshop in aligning with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.
To build on this positive momentum, it is recommended to continue organizing similar workshops in the future. Incorporating additional practical experiences and opportunities for project implementation will further engage students in sustainability initiatives. By doing so, Don Bosco Senior Secondary School can continue to foster a generation of environmentally conscious and proactive individuals dedicated to achieving the SDGs.
