On January 12, 2025, Don Bosco School, Nerul, hosted the vibrant celebration of Salesian Family Day, or ‘Salfam Day.’ The event brought together a diverse gathering of Salesian priests, family delegates, Provincial delegates, Salesian Co-operators, members of the Association of Mary Help of Christians (ADMA), Salesian Sisters of Don Bosco (FMA), past pupils, and members of the Mama Margaret Association from across the province.

The celebration began with a captivating prayer dance performed by women from the skilling units of Don Bosco Academy (DBA), Nerul. Following this, the dignitaries lit the ceremonial lamp, and attendees enthusiastically sang the anthem dedicated to St John Bosco. Fr Barnabe D’Souza, Rector of Don Bosco Nerul, warmly welcomed the guests and shared insights into the school’s journey since its establishment in 1998.

Fr D’Souza highlighted the institution’s achievements, such as its robust CBSE education for 2,500 students and its pandemic-era humanitarian efforts, including distributing medicines, oxygen cylinders, and food to slum areas and remote regions like Himachal Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. He also discussed ongoing social service initiatives, such as the community fridge feeding 100 needy individuals daily, and the DBA’s activities, including skills training, arts and culture, media services, sports, fitness, and psychological wellness at the Prafulta Centre. He shared plans for a film school and other upcoming projects.

The event's chief guest, Fr Ashley Miranda, Vice Provincial of the Salesian Mumbai Province (INB), officially inaugurated the Salfam Day. He praised Fr Allwyn Misquitta, Fr Diago Nunes, and Fr D’Souza for their excellent organization.  He described DBA as a model institution that goes beyond comfort zones to serve society. He emphasized the importance of fostering unity and collaboration in the Salesian family, saying, “Together, we can achieve much and make a difference.”

The gathering included a meaningful presentation by Fr Cleophas Braganza on the Strenna, an Italian word for “gift.” He explained the theme of hope, reflecting on its significance in modern times and encouraging participants to contemplate how they can be instruments of hope. The presentation also celebrated the 150th anniversary of Don Bosco’s first missionary expedition and the jubilee year of Salesian history.

After a brief break, a solemn Eucharistic celebration was concelebrated by the priest present there. It was enhanced by a choir that brought spiritual depth to the day. Spot prizes and interactive activities added a touch of fun. Fr D’Souza presented the comprehensive facilities at DBA, including its support for education, sports, and community service. Ms Jyotsna D’Souza, Headmistress of the Lower Primary Section, highlighted the school’s nurturing environment and excellent infrastructure.

Br Alan D’Silva shed light on DBA’s social outreach programs, which serve over 20 slum communities from Mankhurd to Panvel, offering skills training, adult literacy, and pre-NIOS education to empower women and youth to secure employment.

The day concluded with a vote of thanks and a delicious lunch. The event left attendees with cherished memories and a renewed sense of hope, unity, and purpose in the Salesian mission.
