BIS #7083 Salesian Brother Delegates of South Asia Meet in Mumbai
By Br Royston Colaco for BISMumbai
The Provincial delegates of the Salesian Brothers of the South Asia region gathered at the Don Bosco Provincial House, Mumbai, on 7 and 8 October 2023 to deliberate and strategize for the upcoming Salesian Brothers Congress.
The Congress, which is hosted by the Province of Calcutta, will be held from 30 December 2023 to 3 January 2024. The central theme of this event is ‘The Salesian Brother in the 21st Century: Identity, Fidelity, Leadership’. These three pillars form the foundation upon which the Salesian Brothers build their lives of service, dedication, and impact.
The proceedings began on 7 October with the Holy Eucharist celebrated in the Crypt of the Shrine of Don Bosco's Madonna, presided over by Fr Godfrey D'Souza. In his sermon, Fr D'Souza emphasised the need for the Salesian Brothers to adapt to the challenges and opportunities of the modern era. He underscored their role in providing holistic education, guiding youth in responsible digital engagement, acting as mentors, imparting faith education, and equipping young people with practical life skills.
During the first session, Fr Robert Pen, the South Asia Formation Commission (SAFC) Coordinator, led the Brothers in further exploration of the theme. Fr Pen stressed the importance of the Congress in helping the Salesian Brothers comprehend and embrace their vocation, remain steadfast in their commitment to the Salesian charism, and serve as an inspiration through their humility and service. He also provided insights into the art of discernment, a crucial aspect that would shape the action plan of the event.
The latter part of the first day and the entirety of the following day were dedicated to meticulous planning for the Brothers' Congress. Under the guidance of Br Joby Mani, the National Delegate of the Salesian Brothers of South Asia, the delegates delved into the programme details, schedules, and logistical arrangements.
On the evening of the 7 October, an adoration service centred on the theme of 'The Salesian Brother Vocation' allowed the Brothers to reflect on their consecrated lives within their ministries.
The Salesian Brothers’ Congress is held once every six years. These are moments of grace, reflection, and renewal of commitment, preceded by prayer, discernment and much planning. The South Asia region looks forward to this event.
