BIS #7254 Fr John Samala Laid to Rest in Mumbai

The Salesian community bid farewell to Fr John Samala, who passed away on August 12, 2024. The funeral Mass was held on August 14 at 9:30 a.m. at the Shrine of Don Bosco's Madonna in Matunga, followed by burial at the Christian Cemetery in Sewri.

Fr Savio Silveira, Provincial of Mumbai, presided over the Mass and delivered the homily. Fr Silveira highlighted Fr Samala's simplicity and humility despite his notable qualifications. "Whenever we think of Father John, we think of his simplicity. He was not an ordinary person in so many ways, yet he lived an ordinary, simple, humble life," he said.

The Provincial emphasized Father Samala's dedication to the poor, quoting him: "Like Don Bosco, the poor were always the center of my life." Fr Silveira also noted Fr Samala's cheerful spirit, which he maintained throughout his life.

Fr Francisco Pereira, Rector of St Dominic Savio Andheri spoke about Fr Samala's cheerful nature, smiling face and his fruitful life.

Fr Kasi Sahayaraj, nephew of Fr Samala delivered the eulogy on behalf of his family, describing him as a "good shepherd" who inspired many religious vocations from his village. "He was very generous in sharing his talents, resources, and above all, his God-given faith," Fr Sahayaraj said.

Ms Fernandez spoke on behalf of the school community, praising Fr Samala's unwavering dedication and describing him as a source of inspiration. She highlighted his compassion, love, and faith.

After the Mass, the funeral procession made its way to the Christian Cemetery in Sewri, where Fr Samala was laid to rest. The burial service was attended by Salesian confreres, family members, and numerous friends whose lives were touched by his work.

Fr Samala's life and work left a lasting impact on the Salesian community and those he served.
