BIS #7069 A Smash Hit Badminton Tournament at Jyoti
By Fr Renold Lemos for BISMumbai
The spirit of competition soared high at Jyoti Mata Church, Virar, on 19 and 20 September 2023, as the Second Annual Badminton Tournament was held. Organised by the youth of the parish, under the guidance of Fr Renold Lemos – the Youth Director, this event marked a significant milestone in the Diocese of Vasai. Building upon the success of its inaugural edition last year, this year’s tournament brought together enthusiasts from the diocese and beyond.
The tournament’s inauguration on 19 September was a solemn affair, featuring the ceremonial lighting of the lamp, followed by a prayer. The event was officially declared open by Fr William Falcao – the Parish Priest, instilling a sense of divine blessing into the proceedings. In his inaugural address he remarked, “This event is an opportunity in promoting sportsmanship and fostering a sense of community in the diocese.”
In order to cater to players of varying age groups, the tournament was held in diverse categories. The four main categories included Men’s Double Open, Men’s Double Under 19, Women’s Double, and Mixed Doubles. A noteworthy aspect of the event was the active participation of youth referees from the Parish who ensured fair play and maintained the integrity of the competition.
The tournament reached its pinnacle on 20 September as the semi-finals and finals unfolded. The spectators from across the diocese were treated to thrilling displays of skill and sportsmanship, as players vied for victory. One of the spectators, Mr Ajit Burboz, mentioned, “The intensity on the courts was palpable, as champions emerged in each category displaying their dominance.” The winners were crowned with trophies, medals, and cash prizes. Notably, the youth of the Parish shone brightly, bagging three prizes across various categories.
The overwhelming response and the participant’s positive feedback were a sign of the success of the tournament. Organising such events is possible with the generous support of the sponsors, especially the parishioners, who played a pivotal role in making this tournament a resounding success. With gratitude to all who contributed, the organisers expressed their eagerness to continue organising such events in the future, bigger and better.
