by Alphonsa Ohol for BIS Mumbai

"Sports not only builds better athletes but also stronger bonds and lasting friendships."

On October 5, 2024, the Don Bosco Past Pupils Association in Pune organized a vibrant football and throwball tournament as part of their Golden Jubilee celebrations, marking 50 years of the association. The event was a wonderful blend of nostalgia and sportsmanship, bringing together past pupils, teachers, and dignitaries for a day filled with excitement and unity. Fr Michael Fernandes, the Parish Priest of Sacred Heart Parish, inaugurated the event with an inspiring speech. He emphasized the importance of enjoying the games, urging participants not to take the tournament too seriously but rather to savor the experience. His words encouraged all past students to look forward to the upcoming Grand Reunion with the same enthusiasm and spirit.

Several esteemed guests graced the occasion, including Fr. Michael Fernandes, Fr Joe, Fr Alex, Fr Ajay, Fr Ashwin and Fr Anthony- a past pupil of Don Bosco Yerwada. The event also saw the presence of former teachers such as Mrs Pauline Dias, Mr Katre, and Mr Rajesh Yedlellu, who were delighted to witness the energetic atmosphere created by their former students. The tournament featured 15 football teams and 3 throwball teams, with matches held in a league format. Each football team played three matches, leading up to the semifinals and finals. Over 300 participants enjoyed the event, with complimentary breakfast, lunch, and tea snacks provided, generously sponsored by past pupils.

In addition to the games, entertainment in the form of dance performances by recent alumni and college students added a festive touch to the event. A lively jam session followed with a joyful and interactive atmosphere among all the participants. The tournament, which began at 9 am and concluded by 6 pm, was a full day of fun and engagement. At the end of the day, the prize distribution ceremony was held, where Team Romans emerged as the football champions, with Team DB 11 as the runner-up. Victor Tambi was awarded the Best Senior Player, while Baba Ignitius received the Best Junior Player title. The Best Goalkeeper awards went to Edwin (Senior) and Romel Pereira (Junior). In the throwball category, Team 2017 Batch took home the winner’s trophy, while the Mixed Past Pupil Girls team was the runner-up.

The prizes were distributed by the dignitaries present. The event concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks delivered by Madhan Nair, the Secretary, and Francis Britto, the President of the Past Pupil Association. They expressed their gratitude to all participants, past pupils, and the organizing committee for their efforts in making the day a success. Francis Britto, sharing his personal experience, reflected on the day with great joy: "It is events like these that remind us of the strong bonds we share as Don Bosco past pupils. Today, we are not just celebrating sports; we are celebrating a community that has shaped who we are."
