The Social Communication Commission of the Mumbai Province hosted a pivotal one-day seminar on Artificial Intelligence on November 16, 2024, bringing together delegates and representatives from diverse Salesian institutions across the province.

The day began with a Eucharistic celebration in the crypt presided over by Provincial Fr Savio Silveira followed by an inaugural ceremony.

In his inaugural address, Provincial Fr Savio Silveira drew a powerful connection between Don Bosco's pioneering spirit and contemporary technological innovation. He eloquently stated that "Don Bosco always wanted to adapt the latest technology to use it for the betterment of poor youngsters. And today, AI is one of the major tools available and if that is the forefront of innovation, as Salesians and Don Bosco institutions, it is very important for us to be at the forefront of progress."

The Provincial highlighted AI's potential to revolutionize ministries across various domains - from educational institutions and parishes to technical centers and boarding setups. He challenged the participants to view AI as a strategic instrument for enhancing social communication and educational methodologies.

The seminar followed practical learning as well as theoretical discourse. The day was strategically divided into three key encounters. Fr Ryan Alex's first session explored the foundations of AI, providing a comprehensive overview of its historical development and current technological applications.

The second session, led by the St Paul's Institute of Communications (SPICE) team comprising Fr Reynold, Mr Pradeep Kashyap, and Ms Monica, offered hands-on training with contemporary AI platforms including ChatGPT, PixLR, Invideo, and Gemini. This practical segment enabled participants to directly engage with various AI tools.

Fr Robert Pen's post-lunch session delved into the Church's perspective on AI, addressing ethical considerations and incorporating insights from papal teachings on technological advancement.

Post all the sessions, a discussion unfolded among social communication members and delegates, delving into crucial topics regarding social communication. The one-day workshop concluded with a refreshing tea break, marking the end of a transformative learning experience on AI's potential in Salesian ministries.
