BIS #7311 Youth Empowerment and Togetherness at Shelter Don Bosco Nashik
by Fr Nelson Mudaliar for BIS Mumbai
As the vibrant celebrations of Ganesh Chaturthi swept across India, a wave of mixed emotions enveloped the boys at Shelter Don Bosco. This festive season typically evokes feelings of family warmth and joyous gatherings, yet for these young boys, it can also bring a sense of longing and sadness. However, thanks to the dedicated youth from the Salesian parishes of Don Bosco and Dominic Savio, this year’s festivities took on a brighter hue, filled with laughter, connection, and shared joy.
On Sunday, September 15, the youth—18 of them, guided by the youth animators — Fr. Pannasingh Bhuriya and Fr. Nelson Mudaliar — devoted half a day to the boys at Shelter Don Bosco. Their mission was clear: to create a joyful atmosphere that celebrated not just the spirit of festivities but also the essential bond of community and togetherness.
The day was meticulously planned, with activities designed to engage and uplift the boys. From creative games to lively dance sessions, the youth worked with joy to ensure that the boys felt the warmth of friendship. The interactions nurtured a genuine sense of connection; as they played and danced together, the boys and youth formed meaningful relationships, breaking down barriers and celebrating their shared humanity. One of the youth also sponsored stationery and distributed it to the boys. Adding to the celebration, Fr. Felix Fernandes visited Shelter Don Bosco to support the initiative. His presence was a source of encouragement for both the boys and the youth.
A highlight of the day was the shared meal, which brought everyone together in a warm and familial setting. This meal was brought with love by the youth themselves. It was during this meal that the boys expressed their gratitude for the youth’s presence. They appreciated the fact that these young individuals chose to spend their time with them. The boys' heartfelt acknowledgement served as a reminder of the impact such gestures can have, reinforcing the notion that even small acts of kindness can brighten someone's day.
The day concluded with the boys expressing their appreciation by singing a ‘Thank You’ song for the youth. The smiles on the boys' faces reflected a sense of belonging and happiness that is sometimes hard to come by, especially during major festivals when they would like to have a family around them.
Throughout the day, the youth recognized the stark differences in their lives compared to those of the boys. This realization deepened their understanding and empathy. Many of the youth left Shelter Don Bosco feeling fulfilled, not just by the activities, but by the meaningful connections made and the shared experiences that enriched their own lives. This heart-warming initiative is a testament to the power of community involvement in nurturing and uplifting the lives of the children under the care of Shelter Don Bosco.
