July 6, 2025, Mumbai – The Cafasso Squad and Prison Ministry Mumbai organised the Uturn Night Vigil from July 5 to July 6, 2025, bringing together around 80 participants from Don Bosco Youth Services (DBYS) Mumbai and Prison Ministry Mumbai volunteers for an evening of reflection, inspiration, and solidarity. The vigil was held under the theme “Hope Anchored in Mercy,” aligning with the 2025 Jubilee Year theme.
The event began with an opening session by Prince George, who set a prayerful tone by playing the Prison Ministry Mumbai theme song. The gathering was addressed by Fr Ivo Coelho, former General Councillor for Formation, who reflected on the life and legacy of St Joseph Cafasso, patron of prisoners, and his influence on St John Bosco’s mission. Fr Ivo reminded the participants that every person has a vocation—some have discovered it, while others are still in the process. What matters, he said, is to remain open to God’s call and respond with courage and love.
Fr Glasten Gonsalves, Director of Prison Ministry Mumbai and National Executive Member of Prison Ministry India, lit the campfire, symbolising light in darkness and the warmth of community. The evening continued with light refreshments and interactive games that fostered bonding and camaraderie.
The second half of the vigil focused on creating awareness about the Prison Ministry Movement (PMM). Maria Gomes, Secretary of PMM, gave a brief overview of the ministry’s core activities, challenges, and impact. A short video presentation further illustrated the work being done in prisons across the region.
Volunteers shared personal testimonies, offering first-hand accounts of transformation, hope, and outreach. An interactive quiz and games session based on the Prison Ministry helped participants learn more in an engaging way. Youth from the Jesus Youth Movement led a time of praise and worship, sharing how Christ has transformed their lives. One participant also shared how she was personally inspired to join the ministry after learning about its mission.
The vigil transitioned into a spiritual phase with the Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament. The DBYS youth team led praise and worship, followed by Divine Mercy Adoration. Confessions were also made available during this time.
In a creative and compassionate gesture, participants took part in an activity titled “Colour It With Love.” Each person received a bookmark and stationery to create artistic messages of hope, love, and joy. These bookmarks are to be gifted to juveniles in prison, offering them a reminder of care and encouragement.
As dawn broke on 6 July, the vigil concluded with the celebration of the Holy Eucharist. The Night Vigil was an enriching experience, blending spiritual depth, youthful energy, and a commitment to service.
