by Cl Veenus James for BIS Mumbai
Don Bosco School, Kawant, celebrated Scout Day on the occasion of the 168th birth anniversary of Lord Baden Powell, the founder of the scouting movement. The event was held on the school campus and was graced by the presence of the chief guest, Shri. Ilaben Rathwa, Principal of GLERS School, Gojariya.
The celebration showcased various scouting activities, including physical displays, gadgets, first aid and tent pitching. The scouts demonstrated their skills and dedication, impressing the chief guest, who expressed her deep appreciation for the scouting movement and the efforts of the students. The event highlighted the importance of teamwork, discipline, and self-reliance, core values of scouting.
In the evening, the school organized an overnight scout camp at Saidivasan Boarding School. The camp began with patrols setting up their tents and creating gadgets. The scouts also engaged in gadget-making activities, demonstrating their ability to construct useful items using simple materials. The evening concluded with a dinner followed by a grand campfire, fostering camaraderie and unity among the scouts.
A notable feature of the first day of the camp was an awareness program on sickle cell disease and tuberculosis, conducted for the villagers of Saidivasan. This initiative was led by Mr Ranchod Rathva, an alumnus of Don Bosco Kawant, with the active participation of the scouts. This session was both informative and impactful, reinforcing the scouts' commitment to community service.
The following day commenced with an inspection, flag hoisting, and an invigorating hike. The scouts had the unique experience of cooking their own food in the forest, which strengthened their teamwork and survival skills. After lunch, a fun-filled housie game was organized by the teachers, adding a recreational element to the camp.
Overall, the Scout Day celebrations and the overnight camp were a resounding success. The students thoroughly enjoyed their time in nature, learning valuable life skills, and engaging in various activities that enhanced their personal growth. The event not only strengthened their scouting spirit but also provided an opportunity to serve the community and build lifelong memories.
