BIS #7545 Journeying with Project Mumbai’s Zero Waste School Initiative
by Valerie Mascarenhas for BIS Mumbai
St. Dominic Savio High School, Andheri, embarked on its journey with Project Mumbai’s Zero Waste School Initiative at the start of AY 2024-2025. This initiative aims to instil responsible waste management practices within schools, encouraging students and staff to adopt sustainable habits.
The transition to a zero-waste system has presented challenges. Understanding the need for this initiative, ensuring proper segregation, and implementing composting practices required a collective effort. Waste segregation follows four key categories: wet, dry, electronic, and plastic waste. While significant progress has been made, perfecting this system remains an ongoing process. Continued efforts are being made to refine methods, with the future focus on reducing plastic waste and improving electronic waste recycling.
To deepen their understanding, students actively participated in workshops conducted by Project Mumbai, equipping them with knowledge and hands-on experience in sustainable waste management. These sessions have been instrumental in shaping environmentally conscious attitudes and inspiring proactive engagement in zero-waste efforts.
In recognition of active participation in fostering a sustainable environment, Project Mumbai gifted the school two benches made from recycled plastic—an encouraging reminder of the impact of sustainability-driven actions. However, the motivation extends beyond rewards; responsible waste management is a duty shared by all, and every member of the school community has a role to play.
A crucial driving force behind this movement has been the support staff and student clubs, particularly members of the Savion Trailblazers and Earth Club, who have taken on the responsibility of spreading awareness and monitoring waste management practices. Guided by dedicated mentor teachers, these students are leading the way in fostering environmental responsibility.
As a Salesian institution, St. Dominic Savio High School remains committed to caring for creation and forming responsible citizens. With renewed vigor, the journey continues—not just for a bench, but for a sustainable future for all.
