Makarpura, Vadodara, 28 June 2025: Don Bosco Makarpura hosted a zonal workshop and seminar on BIS Correspondence for the Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh region, bringing together correspondents from various Don Bosco institutions to enhance their communication and reporting skills. The session was animated by Fr Joyston Machado SDB, Provincial Delegate for Social Communication of the Mumbai Province, along with Mr Joy Fernandes, a member of the Social Communication Commission.
The workshop, attended by 10 participants, was part of a new initiative to foster more focused interaction and training in smaller zonal clusters. Fr Machado opened the seminar by underlining the importance of BIS as a vital tool for sharing the Salesian mission and building communion across provinces. He also led a creative session titled “The Traveller Game” to help participants better understand the dynamics of communication.
Mr Fernandes followed with an engaging session on the fundamentals of news writing. He highlighted the 5Ws and 1H—What, When, Where, Who, Why, and How—as the essential framework for crafting a clear and complete report. He further elaborated on the types and elements of news, how to structure reports according to the BIS Style Guide, and concluded with tips on capturing impactful photographs to accompany written stories.
A practical writing activity allowed each participant to draft a news article based on current activities in their institutions. These reports were then shared, reviewed, and discussed to provide constructive feedback and real-time learning.
The session concluded with a vote of thanks from Fr Machado, who reminded the group that every story shared through BIS is a step toward making Don Bosco’s mission known, loved, and lived in every corner of the zone.
