BIS #7284 The Catechists Meeting at DBPH
by Fr Nathaneal George sdb for BIS Mumbai
The Catechists meeting was held on August 28, 2024, at Don Bosco Provincial House, Mumbai. The day began with a Holy Mass celebrated in the Crypt, setting a spiritual tone for the rest of the day. Fr Savio Silveira, Provincial of the Mumbai Province, delivered a homily focussing on the threefold ministry of Jesus: teaching, preaching, and healing. He highlighted how these aspects of Jesus' ministry are crucial for catechists to emulate in their work.
Following the Mass, the meeting commenced with the Provincial's address. He outlined three primary responsibilities of a catechist:
Spiritual Animation of the Community: Catechists are tasked with nurturing the spiritual life of their communities, ensuring that the spiritual activities are meaningful and engaging.
Healing Ministry: The role of the catechist also extends to caring for the well-being of fellow confreres and those residing in Salesian houses. This responsibility emphasizes the need for compassion and support within the community.
Missionary Animation: The Provincial introduced a new development, emphasizing that catechists should take on the role of missionary animation at the local level. This involves inspiring and guiding the community in missionary activities and outreach.
He concluded by stressing that catechists are vital in making the community’s spiritual journey a deliberate and significant effort.
The first session was conducted by Fr. Francisco Pereira, SDB, who focused on the importance of adequate preparation and maintaining decorum during liturgical celebrations. He repeatedly emphasized that a poorly conducted liturgy could hinder someone’s encounter with Jesus. Through practical suggestions, tips, and humorous anecdotes, Fr Pereira illustrated that well-conducted liturgy has the power to be both profound and catechetical. He stressed that liturgy, being a visible act, plays a crucial role in helping people experience the invisible presence of God.
The second session was led by dietician Ms Shruti Vaidya, who addressed a wide range of topics related to nutrition and health. She discussed the appropriate balance of macronutrients and micronutrients and the importance of regular exercise. Her simple yet informative explanations dispelled various myths and misconceptions about food, helping attendees understand the nuances of 'good' and 'bad' foods. The key takeaway from her session was the importance of living in moderation and maintaining discipline. The age-old adage, “a sound mind in a sound body,” was underlined as a guiding principle for overall well-being.
The final session was conducted by Fr Ashley Miranda, SDB, the Vice-Provincial of the Mumbai Province. He elaborated on the significance of mental and emotional well-being, particularly focusing on issues prevalent among middle-aged individuals. Fr Miranda highlighted the importance of recognizing red flags that indicate deteriorating mental health. He concluded the session by outlining various strategies and actions to promote mental well-being, encouraging attendees to be proactive in maintaining their mental health.
The meeting concluded in the late afternoon. The attendees departed, enriched by the day’s discussions and ready to implement the insights gained into their respective roles as catechists.
