On August 20, 2024, St. Dominic Savio High School in Andheri conducted its annual staff retreat. The event, focused on reconnecting educators with Salesian pedagogical principles, was led by Father Blany Pinto, Rector of Don Bosco Lonavala and Provincial Councillor, along with Brother Royston Colaco, the Province Vocation Animator.

The retreat centered on adapting Don Bosco’s educational approach to contemporary challenges in education. Father Pinto presented Don Bosco's Rome letter from May 10, 1884, describing it as a strategic document for the Congregation's future.

"There is an urgent need to adapt Don Bosco's principles to modern times," Father Pinto said. He emphasized the importance of educators maintaining a strong presence among students, balancing care with appropriate boundaries.

Brother Colaco discussed the Preventive System of Education, focusing on its three pillars: reason, religion, and loving kindness. He introduced the Valdocco Model, which suggests structuring Salesian institutions around four aspects: home, school, parish, and playground. "These elements will take care of the body, soul, and mind of the youth," Brother Colaco explained.

The retreat included group discussions and case studies to explore practical applications of these concepts in a school setting. Participants were encouraged to consider how they could engage more effectively with students and address their aspirations.

Some teachers shared their reactions to the retreat. Diana Mascarenhas, a pre-primary educator, noted the potential benefits of integrating the four aspects of the Valdocco Model into school events. Nereen D'mello from the secondary section said the retreat reaffirmed Salesian values for her. Natasha Rodrigues, from the Primary Section, felt that the retreat strengthened the staff's commitment to Don Bosco’s vision of holistic education and relational support for students.

The school administration hopes this annual event will help maintain the institution's alignment with Salesian educational principles while addressing current educational challenges. The effectiveness of the retreat in influencing day-to-day teaching practices remains to be seen as the school year progresses.
