BIS #7386 Celebrating light over darkness
The festival Diwali symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, and love over hatred. Don Bosco School and Junior College, Nasik, honoured this vibrant celebration with a special program on October 25, 2024, held in the Parish Hall. The event was graced by prominent members of the Don Bosco community: Fr Royal, the Rector; Fr Rixson, the Principal; Fr Nelson, in charge of Don Bosco Shelter; and Fr Felix.
The celebration began with the lighting of the lamp by the school’s management and the school captain, Om Jannrao. This was followed by a prayer, asking God to fill everyone with the positive spirit of Diwali and drive away negativity. The significance of Diwali was brought to life through a beautifully crafted skit performed by the students of the middle school. The students depicted each of the five days, starting with Dhanteras, Vasubaras, Naraka Chaturdashi (Choti Diwali), the main day of Diwali, Diwali Padwa or Bali Pratipada, and finally Bhai Dooj. This performance was accompanied by a traditional dance, invoking blessings of prosperity and happiness.
In a meaningful gesture, all students and teachers took a vow to celebrate an eco-friendly Diwali. A video was then shown, illustrating the importance of avoiding firecrackers and embracing kindness, empathy, and humility. The video encouraged students to celebrate Diwali by helping those less fortunate, spreading light and joy to those who need it most.
The atmosphere in the hall was filled with festive cheer, adorned with colourful lanterns and lights, adding to the joy and spirit of Diwali. Teacher Deepali delivered a vote of thanks for the members of management, who also expressed gratitude for the effort put forth by the students and teachers. Fr Rixson also thanked everyone for the successful execution of the event and emphasized that during this festive season, spreading kindness and happiness in others’ lives is as essential as celebrating.
The celebration continued with an inspiring story shared by Fr Rixson, the Principal. He recounted the touching story of a young boy who noticed an elderly woman selling handmade diyas by the roadside. With a heart full of compassion, the boy took a photo of her and posted it on social media, urging people to buy her diyas and support her livelihood. Thanks to his kind-hearted act, many people responded, and the woman was able to sell all her earthen diyas. Fr Rixson shared this story as a reminder to the students that true beauty lies within - a generous and kind heart ready to uplift the less fortunate.
Following the Diwali programme, Fr Nathaneal conducted a seminar for the students of Std X and XII. He spoke about time management, achieving success through effective planning, working on one’s goals, and having the courage to overcome failure. He introduced techniques to set and achieve goals, inspiring students to make the most of their potential. This Diwali celebration at Don Bosco was not only a tribute to cultural traditions but also a reminder of the power of kindness, empathy, and positive actions, lighting up hearts as well as homes.
