BIS #7483 Banswara Celebrates St John Bosco Feast with First Football Match

by Fr Michael Bansode for BIS Mumbai

The newly established Don Bosco mission in Banswara took a significant step towards advancing higher education while staying true to Don Bosco’s educational philosophy, "First the playground, then the school." In alignment with this vision, the mission organized its first-ever football match on the feast of St. John Bosco, held on the new playground.

The match featured two teams: one from Kevadiya Parish and the other from the neighboring Sts. Peter and Paul Parish. The match was refereed by Fr Glen Fernandes, who ensured a fair and smooth game. Before the match, Fr Michael Bansode addressed the teams with an inspiring speech on Don Bosco, emphasizing the importance of sportsmanship, teamwork, and perseverance. His words motivated the players, filling them with positive energy.

As the game unfolded, both teams showcased remarkable enthusiasm, skill, and coordination, keeping the spectators fully engaged. The competition was fierce, with each side creating several goal-scoring opportunities. Ultimately, the Sts. Peter and Paul Parish team triumphed, demonstrating excellent teamwork and strategy. Despite their loss, the Kevadiya Parish team exhibited immense determination, fighting hard until the final whistle.

To honor the players’ efforts and recognize outstanding performances, several awards were presented after the match. These included: Best Player of the Day, Best Goalkeeper, Runner-Up, Fabulous Player of the Day, Best Team Trophy.

Individual trophies were also awarded to the players of the winning team. Fr Michael presented the prizes, congratulating the winners for their dedication, while encouraging the runners-up for their commendable performance.

Following the match, Fr Glen Fernandes, along with Fr Ivan Rodrigues, ensured refreshments were provided to all players and attendees, bringing a joyful conclusion to the event.

The festivities continued with a solemn Eucharistic celebration in honor of St. John Bosco. Fr Nirmal Baria, the parish priest of Sts. Peter and Paul, served as the principal celebrant, while Fr Arun, the dean of the Banswara Deanery, was the preacher of the day. This sacred gathering brought together 45 priests and nuns from the Banswara Deanery, reflecting the unity and spiritual strength of the Salesian mission. The celebration was deeply meaningful, embodying Don Bosco’s vision of holistic education, where spiritual, academic, and physical development complement each other.

The celebrations concluded with a fellowship meal, where priests, nuns, community members, and support staff came together in a spirit of joy and togetherness. This gathering not only strengthened bonds but also reinforced the spirit of Don Bosco’s teachings.

One of the players from Kevadiya Parish reflected, “It was an unforgettable match. Though we didn’t win, we learned the true spirit of Don Bosco—to never give up and always strive for excellence.”

The first-ever football match at Don Bosco Banswara was more than just a game; it was a celebration of sportsmanship, community, and Don Bosco’s legacy. This event has laid a strong foundation for the mission's commitment to a holistic approach to education, integrating physical, spiritual, and academic growth.
