BIS #7361 A Youth Outreach to Shirur - Carmel Centre for Mentally Retarded
by Sr Reshma Rosario for BIS Mumbai
With hearts filled with purpose, the youth from Don Bosco Church, Savedi, and St. Anne’s Parish Ahmednagar set out on October 12, 2024, on a meaningful outreach to Shirur Carmel Centre for the Mentally Retarded, where 47 mentally challenged residents are cared for, by the Carmel Sisters. The journey began at 9:30 a.m. with a heartfelt prayer led by Fr. Ajay D'Monte, as they invoked the intercession of St Carlo Acutis on his feast day.
As they reached Shirur, they were greeted with a heartwarming surprise—an enthusiastic welcome by the sisters and residents, who welcomed them with a band. Their joy and warmth were contagious.
The applause from the residents enveloped the youth in a wave of love and acceptance. Sr Soumya, the superintendent, introduced them to the center, explaining the care provided to residents, whose ages range from 35 to 62 years. Fr Richard Burkhao then introduced the youth group, and with Fr Ajay leading, they began with a lively rendition of the action song “Happy Day,” which brought smiles and laughter to everyone present. The residents too joined with a bright smile on their faces.
The afternoon was spent engaging with the residents, playing games, and sharing joyful moments. Those who were unable to participate still enjoyed watching from the sidelines, touched by the spirit of togetherness that filled the air. A delicious meal was prepared by the center's cooks, after which they took a peaceful walk around the grounds, marveling at the serenity and order of the place.
Before departing, The team presented gifts of groceries and financial aid, which were warmly received by Sr. Soumya. This day was not only about giving but also about receiving—receiving the gifts of understanding, compassion, and the beauty of human connection.
The 35 youth participants, accompanied by Fr. Richard Burkhao, Fr. Ajay D'Monte, and Sr. Reshma Rosario, left Shirur with hearts full of gratitude and minds filled with reflection. The youth felt deeply moved by the experience, realizing the profound joy that comes from serving others and witnessing the resilience of the residents. They shared how the outreach taught them the true meaning of service—caring for the most vulnerable among us and recognizing the face of Christ in every person we meet. This outreach has left an indelible mark on their souls, reminding them of the power of love and the privilege of being able to serve.
