By Fr Nathanael George SDB for BIS Mumbai
In an era where technology and media shape the lives of young people, Fr Arockia Selvakumar SDB addressed the Social Communication delegates of the INB Province on the need to move from being users to creators of content, taking the mission of Don Bosco into the digital world. The day was spent in a deep dive into actually using AI driven apps like ChatGPT, SUNO etc, which helped many dispel doubts and apprehensions about the use of AI based apps.
He began by observing that most people use social media only for entertainment or information. “The challenge before us,” he said, “is to take the press of Don Bosco’s time and bring it to the AI labs of today.” Highlighting how influencers and content creators now play the role of opinion leaders, he challenged the group to ask: “Do we have anything new to tell the young?”
Understanding the Digital Generation
Fr Selvakumar outlined the reality of Gen Z in India:
• Highly mobile-savvy and visual-first learners
• Short attention spans, but strong aspirations
• Learning is outcome-based and they seek guidance.
He emphasized that today’s mission field is hybrid: both physical and digital. Christ must be present not only in chapels but also through screens. For Salesians, this means being present where young people are: on platforms like Instagram, YouTube, and WhatsApp.
Media as the New Oratory
Fr Selvakumar called on Salesians to become digital shepherds—listening, guiding, and evangelizing online. He encouraged creating mission-driven content such as short videos, reels, music, and good night talks, while also paying attention to mental health and accompanying with empathy rather than control. He shared how media can be used creatively through podcasts, films, and reflections, nurturing faith in simple, engaging ways.
AI and the Salesian Mission
Introducing participants to AI, he explained the three levels—ANI, AGI, and ASI—likening AI to fire: “It can warm the house or burn it down.” He presented practical AI tools like Perplexity, Runway ML, Heygen, and Magisterium AI, showing how they can support evangelization, education, and mission.
He also stressed the importance of ethical use—ensuring transparency, safeguarding privacy, and maintaining the human touch.
A Call to Action
Fr Selvakumar concluded with a strong invitation: “We are called to be digital disciples. If we don’t tell our story, who will?” Urging everyone to “put out into the deep,” he encouraged Salesians to confidently embrace the digital mission field in the spirit of Don Bosco.
