On January 25, 2026, the Sacrament of the First Holy Communion was solemnly and joyfully administered at Sacred Heart Parish, Yerwada. The occasion marked a significant milestone in the faith journey of 30 children, who received Jesus in the Holy Eucharist for the very first time. The church was filled with prayerful silence, joy, and gratitude as parents, catechism teachers, and parishioners gathered to witness this sacred celebration.
The Holy Mass began with a graceful procession, during which the First Holy Communion children walked together and entered the church with devotion and reverence.
The Eucharistic celebration was presided over by Fr Michael Fernandes, the Parish Priest, who was the main celebrant for the day. He was joined by Fr Crispino D’Souza, the Rector, Fr Anton D’Souza, and Fr Bosco D’Mello as concelebrants.
During his homily, Fr Fernandes highlighted the importance of the First Holy Communion by sharing meaningful examples and guidance for the children. He explained that this day is one of the most important days in their lives, as it marks the beginning of a close and personal relationship with Jesus. He encouraged the children to attend Holy Mass every Sunday and to receive Jesus regularly, reminding them that the Eucharist is a constant source of strength, grace, and guidance.
To help the children understand this message better, he shared the story of Napoleon Bonaparte. Although Napoleon was a great military leader who had won many battles, when soldiers once asked him about the most important day of his life, he did not mention his victories. Instead, he said that the most important and most cherished day was the day he received Jesus for the first time at his First Holy Communion. Through this story, the priest reminded the children that no success in life is greater than having Jesus in one’s heart.
He concluded by encouraging the children to treasure this sacrament, keep their hearts pure, and remain close to Jesus through prayer, regular participation in the Holy Mass, and good deeds.
Following the homily, the offertory procession took place, during which candles, spiritual bouquets, bread, and wine were reverently offered. After receiving Holy Communion, the children performed an action song titled “Mera Yeh Jeevan Badal Badal Gaya,” beautifully expressing how Jesus transforms lives. The song was well trained by the dedicated catechism teachers.
The celebration concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks delivered by one of the parents of a First Holy Communicant, who expressed sincere gratitude to the catechism teachers for their patience and dedication, and thanked the priests and all those who contributed to making the celebration a meaningful and memorable success.
One child expressed:“I felt very happy and peaceful when I received Jesus for the first time. It was a very special day for me.”
Another child shared: “Receiving First Holy Communion made me feel close to Jesus. I want to come for Mass every Sunday and receive Him with love.”
