On September 27, 2025, the parish council members of St John Bosco Church, Borivali, along with few parishioners accompanied by our parish priest Fr Manuel and Fr Vishal came together for a meaningful and enriching Basic Ecclesial Community (BEC) workshop animated by Fr. Jacob and Sr. Jennifer. The session, held in the parish hall, gathered parishioners from different zones with the aim of deepening their understanding of BECs and strengthening their commitment to building a vibrant Christian community.
The workshop began with an opening prayer, invoking the guidance of the Holy Spirit and enthronement of the Holy Bible. Fr Jacob then introduced the theme of the day, highlighting the importance of BECs as “a family of families” rooted in faith, prayer, and service. He explained how BECs are not just small groups but living expressions of the Church at the grassroots level. Through engaging stories, he emphasized that the Church is most alive when people come together to share the Word of God and support one another in daily life.
Following this, Sr Jennifer led an interactive session using short activities, group sharing, and role plays. She stressed the value of listening and participation, reminding everyone that each member of the community has a unique role to play. Her animated approach encouraged us to reflect on the personal involvement and challenged them to go beyond mere attendance to active discipleship.
The workshop also included a session on the practical functioning of BECs—how to organize neighbourhood prayer meetings, how to integrate the Gospel into daily concerns, and how to respond collectively to the needs of the poor and marginalized. Information was given on simple tools and guidelines to make gatherings more meaningful and Spirit-filled.
One of the most striking parts of the day was the sharing of testimonies. Several participants spoke about how being part of a BEC had transformed their faith life, strengthened family bonds, and created a sense of belonging. Their experiences highlighted the fact that when people gather in Christ’s name, even small actions—like praying together or visiting the sick—can make a big impact.
The workshop concluded with a thankful gesture, reminding everyone that the BEC is always nourished by the Word and the Sacrament. Fr Jacob encouraged participants to carry the workshop’s insights into their homes and neighbourhoods, becoming “missionary disciples” who bring Christ’s love into the world.
Overall, the BEC workshop was a day of inspiration, learning, and renewal. It left the parish community motivated to strengthen their small Christian communities and continue walking together in faith, unity, and service.
