Music therapy has long been recognised as a powerful tool with a scientifically proven impact on the brain. It helps reduce anxiety, enhances concentration, and makes learning a joyful experience. For children with special needs, music becomes more than just melody—it becomes a bridge to communicate, express emotions, and connect with the world around them. Through rhythm, sound, and movement, children are able to develop important cognitive, social, emotional, and motor skills in a supportive and holistic environment.
On November 22, 2025, Don Bosco International School (DBIS), Matunga, in collaboration with Wading Through Life Funtoosh (WTL), Nerul, organised a special Music Therapy Session titled “Musical Expression” for children with special needs. Held in the school hall, the event saw enthusiastic participation from children and their families, who gathered to experience the therapeutic and joyful nature of music-based activities. The session opened with Ms Wenonah Castellino, Founder Director of WTL - Funtoosh, who warmly addressed the audience and highlighted the importance and long-term benefits of music therapy for children. Her introduction set the tone for an enriching and inclusive experience.
The event began with a heartfelt ‘Thank You’ song that encouraged a spirit of gratitude and helped the children ease comfortably into the session. This was followed by an energetic dance number led by Ms Leann Dsouza – Music Teacher at DBIS, which quickly brought both parents and children onto the floor. Laughter, movement, and music filled the hall as everyone participated wholeheartedly. The next activity ‘Musical Rhythm’ led by Ms Castellino introduced Percussion instruments like tambourines, claves and drums provided by the school, inviting everyone to walk together in a large circle. The rhythmic beats created an atmosphere of unity and excitement, with volunteers from Don Bosco Youth Services (DBYS) joining in and encouraging the children. Another lively song followed, similar to a marching band style, and it had everyone joyfully tapping their feet and moving to the beat. Ms Bindu – School Counsellor gave tips and tricks on coping mechanisms on how to address behavioural concern with the kids.
The session concluded with a thoughtful vote of thanks by Fr Ajoy Fernandes, Director of Don Bosco International School, Matunga. He emphasized the importance of coming together as a community to support and empower children with special needs. Ms Castellino expressed her gratitude to Fr Fernandes for his encouragement, to Ms Dsouza for crafting an engaging and child-friendly program, to Fr Leon Cruz, Director for Youth Services at DB Matunga and to the DBYS youth for their valuable time and enthusiastic participation.
The event left a lasting impact, celebrating music as a joyful pathway to growth and connection.
