The Sacred Heart Parish, Yerwada, joyfully celebrated the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross on September 14, 2025, during the 8:30 a.m. Eucharist.
The Holy Mass was solemnly presided over by Fr Michael Fernandes, the Parish Priest. In his homily, Fr Fernandes explained with great clarity the profound symbolism of the Cross. He highlighted that the vertical beam of the Cross reminds us of being deeply rooted in God, drawing strength, direction, and life from Him. At the same time, the horizontal beam calls us to reach out in love to our neighbours, extending our hands in service, compassion, and fraternity. The Cross, therefore, is not merely a symbol of suffering, but a living reminder of God’s immense love that binds heaven and earth, God and humanity, together in salvation.
Fr Fernandes also shared the meaning of different types of crosses. He briefly explained the significance of the PIME Cross, a sign of missionary zeal; the Benedict Cross, a symbol of protection against evil and temptation; and the Tau Cross, dear to St Francis of Assisi, which stands for humility, simplicity, and renewal of life. His words left the faithful enriched, deepening their appreciation of the Cross as the source of hope and a call to live a life of faith.
Following the Holy Communion, a short video clip was presented that further explained the significance and symbolism of each type of cross. This visual presentation made the teaching more vivid and engaging, especially for the young students
A special highlight of the celebration was that a few catechism children had lovingly prepared the various Crosses with the help of their catechism teachers which they carried forward to the Altar for the presentation. This gesture symbolized their personal offering of faith and devotion, and their willingness to carry the Cross of Christ in their own lives. It was a touching and inspiring moment for the entire parish community, as the children became living witnesses of the faith they are being nurtured in.
The parishioners left the church with renewed hearts, strengthened in their trust in the saving power of Christ’s Cross.
As the message of the day reminded all: “With Jesus, even struggles shine with purpose.” May the Cross of Christ always be our source of hope, strength, and victory, guiding us each day with courage, faith, love and trust in God's plans.
