Jaigaon village in Sinnar Block, Nashik, witnessed a significant milestone in girls’ empowerment on February 12, 2026, as 30 school-going girls received bicycles under the Sustainable Energy, Education and Development (SEED) initiative. Aptly titled “Empowering Girls through Mobility for Education,” the ceremony symbolised far more than a distribution programme — it represented the removal of a daily barrier that often stands between rural girls and their right to education.
The SEED initiative is supported by General Mills India Private Limited, whose sustained commitment to community development and inclusive growth continues to create meaningful change at the grassroots level. By recognizing mobility as a crucial factor in educational access, General Mills is enabling girls to travel to school safely, reduce physical strain, save valuable time, and improve their regular attendance.
The project is implemented by BOSCONET and Bosco Gramin Vikas Kendra (BGVK), ensuring strong community participation and effective on-ground execution.
The programme was graced by Ms Jana Gaffaney, Vice President – Legal; Ms Elena Cortes, Director – Legal; Ms Jaishree Nilkhan, Head of External Relations; and Ms Shivangi Sharma, Head – Legal, India, from General Mills. The initiative also received wholehearted support from Village Sarpanch Mr Santosh Daund and the School Headmistress, Mrs Sonawane, reflecting strong local ownership and collaboration.
Addressing the gathering, Ms Jaishree Nilkhan encouraged the girls to pursue their education with zeal and enthusiasm, reminding them that education opens doors to independence and opportunity. Ms Jana Gaffaney expressed her happiness at being part of the initiative and emphasized, “Education is very important in one’s life. Study well, and we also urge parents to ensure that their daughters receive the education they deserve.” In her address, Ms Shivangi Sharma appreciated the determination of the girls, acknowledging their efforts to educate themselves despite challenges, and encouraged them to continue striving for excellence. On the occasion, Fr Santhanam Ubagaram, National Director of Bosconet, said, “With a legacy of 160 years, General Mills is a global company that upholds strong values and social responsibility. Through its CSR initiatives in India, it is contributing to food security, sustainable agriculture, and community empowerment. This initiative in Jaigaon is an important step toward meaningful social transformation. On behalf of the village communities, we sincerely thank General Mills for their support.”
As the bicycles were handed over, the joy and renewed confidence on the faces of the beneficiaries spoke volumes. For these 30 girls, a bicycle is not merely a means of transport — it represents access, independence, safety, and a strengthened commitment to continue their educational journey without interruption.
This collaborative effort continues to transform distance into opportunity, ensuring that mobility no longer limits a girl’s right to learn and grow.
