On October 1, 2025, Don Bosco School and Junior College organized a special event to commemorate the birth anniversaries of two of India’s most respected leaders – Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation, and Lal Bahadur Shastri, India’s second Prime Minister. The event was aimed at paying tribute to their values of truth, simplicity, non-violence, patriotism, and public service.
The day began with a prayer service held in the school assembly area. Portraits of the two great leaders were adorned with garlands, followed by the lighting of the ceremonial lamp by Principal Fr Rixson, the Supervisor, and school representatives — symbolizing the light of truth and wisdom..The school choir rendered soul-stirring bhajans like “Raghupati Raghav Raja Ram” and “Sabarmati ke Sant Tune”, both deeply connected to Gandhiji’s life and message. The music created a serene and reflective atmosphere that resonated with the values the leaders stood for.
Student speeches followed, offering insights into the lives, struggles, and enduring legacies of both Gandhiji and Shastriji. The speakers highlighted Gandhiji’s unwavering commitment to truth, non-violence, and cleanliness, and Shastriji’s dedication to self-reliance, symbolized by his famous slogan “Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan.” These heartfelt tributes served as a reminder for all to uphold these values in daily life.
In alignment with Gandhiji’s ideals, a Cleanliness Drive was organized immediately after the prayer service, particularly involving students from Classes 8 and 9. Armed with brooms, gloves, and dustbins, students took part in cleaning the school premises and surrounding areas under the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan. The highlight was a student rally, where participants marched through nearby streets, proudly holding placards with impactful slogans like “Clean India, Green India,” “Say No to Plastic,” and “Be the Change.” Their enthusiasm and commitment caught the attention of local residents and passersby, who lauded the students for their initiative and message.
Then, the Principal, Fr Rixson, took the stage to deliver the Vote of Thanks. In his address, he expressed heartfelt gratitude to all those who contributed to the success of the event. He reminded everyone that the real tribute to Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri lies not just in remembering them once a year, but in living by their values every day. He urged the students to uphold truth, peace, and service in their lives, and to always strive to be agents of positive change in society.
