Bosco Gramin Vikas Kendra (BGVK) in Kedgaon, Ahmednagar, transformed into a hub of activity on November 30, 2025, hosting its annual Bal Mela. The event successfully gathered over 578 children from 25 villages, all participants in the Remedial Education & Development (READ) Project, an initiative supported by BOSCONET. The Mela was specifically designed to be an uplifting experience, focusing on building the children’s confidence, encouraging self-expression, and strengthening their sense of community.
The extensive planning and coordination for the Mela were led by the network of teachers across the 25 villages. Key to the organization were Coordinator Ms Geeta Gonsalves and field staff Yogesh Mirpagar of the READ Project.
The day commenced with the registration process, quickly followed by the ceremonial opening. The traditional lighting of the lamp and a prayer dance set a respectful tone. Fr Ajit Munis, Principal of Don Bosco School and Junior College, Savedi, served as the chief guest for the day. Following the ceremony, Fr George, Director of BGVK, welcomed and felicitated the guests, expressing appreciation for their presence and continuous support of the project’s mission.
Following the initial formalities, the atmosphere shifted as the students launched into a spirited action song. Their high level of energy was contagious. The chief guest and the project team then shared encouraging messages, urging the young participants to pursue their dreams diligently, trust in their abilities, and remain dedicated to their educational journeys.
The afternoon’s entertainment peaked with a magic show, which instantly became the main attraction. The children responded with open delight, their laughter and spontaneous applause filling the venue as they watched the tricks unfold.
After a communal lunch break, the students took to the stage for the highly anticipated performance segment. Each class presented cultural dances and group pieces that vividly demonstrated the preparation, discipline, and team spirit nurtured within the READ Project. These performances were a strong indicator of the children’s increasing comfort and poise in a public setting.
The event fostered a palpable sense of unity. Children actively supported one another, and the staff and teachers showed constant encouragement. Parents in attendance smiled as they watched their children take the spotlight, validating the project’s impact.
The successful spirit of the Mela was captured in several comments gathered during the day:
“These opportunities are crucial for helping our children build confidence and associate joy with the process of learning.” — Fr Ajit Munis, Chief Guest
“Today underscored the fundamental importance of ensuring every child is seen, celebrated, and supported in their growth.” —Mrs Deshmukh, Head Teacher Zilla Parishad School, Adhavwadi.
“I thought the magic show was the best part!” — (Avish Dhage, Grade 4)
The Bal Mela concluded with a Thanksgiving segment, leaving all participants children, staff, and guests with a strong sense of collective achievement and gratitude. The day was a powerful demonstration of the READ Project’s commitment: providing children with foundational learning skills while deliberately cultivating their self-assurance and happiness. The event closed with positive memories and clear evidence that joyful learning leads to thriving children.
