As part of the celebration of National Science Day observed on February 28, Prayas Kendra – Don Bosco Borivali organised a Vigyan Yatra to Sanjay Gandhi National Park on February 19, 2026. The objective of the visit was to celebrate Science Day meaningfully and to foster a lasting interest in science through appreciation of nature, wildlife, and environmental awareness. A total of 20 children participated in the excursion, accompanied by Ms Natal, Ms Juliet, Ms Isabel, and Mr Francis, under the guidance of the Director, Fr Mario.
The group travelled by Metro train, departing at 9 a.m. and returning at 3.30 p.m. For safety and coordination, the children were divided into four teams — Red, Blue, Green, and Yellow — each supervised by a teacher. Every child wore an identity card with a contact number, and coloured ribbons were used as team identifiers.
Within the park, transportation was arranged by e-buggy. The group first visited the Taxidermy Museum, followed by the Orchid Park and the Wild Cat Information Centre and Museum. Knowledgeable guides shared fascinating insights about biodiversity, ecosystems, and wildlife conservation, enriching the children’s understanding through interactive explanations.
At 11 a.m., the children enjoyed a breakfast break with homemade snacks, along with samosa-pav and Frooti. A playful intrusion by a troop of monkeys added excitement and amusement to the morning. The next highlight was a delightful 40-minute toy-train ride through a scenic 2.5 km stretch of lush greenery, beginning and ending at Krishnagiri Station.
At 1.45 p.m., the group proceeded for the much-awaited Tiger and Lion Safari. The children were excited to see a full-grown lion and two lionesses resting in the shade. A particularly thrilling sight was a mother tigress with her five cubs. They also spotted additional tigers in nearby enclosures, making the safari an unforgettable experience.
Before departure, a short on-the-spot Mastery Quiz was conducted and five spot prizes were awarded. The children expressed gratitude to the Forest Officer who facilitated the visit; Bhagyashree delivered a thank-you speech, and Varun presented a handmade card. After a hearty lunch, the group returned to Don Bosco Borivali, where they thanked Fr Mario for organising the enriching experience.
The Vigyan Yatra successfully combined the spirit of National Science Day with experiential learning. It nurtured curiosity, encouraged observation and inquiry, and deepened appreciation for biodiversity and conservation, making it both educational and memorable for all.
