Though the monsoon skies delayed the Feast of St. Dominic Savio from July 6 to July 16, they could not dampen the spirit of celebration as the entire school community of St. Dominic Savio High School, Andheri, gathered in faith, joy and gratitude to honour its beloved patron saint, celebrating his enduring legacy with enthusiasm and the true Salesian spirit.
The celebrations were preceded by a nine-day novena that began on June 27, inviting students and staff to reflect on the inspiring life and virtues of the "Little Giant Saint." Each day's reflection focused on a different aspect of St. Dominic Savio's life, encouraging students to embrace faith, hope and purpose while striving to become compassionate, responsible and hope-filled individuals who positively influence others.
As part of the festive celebration, students participated in a variety of age-appropriate activities that brought the saint's life alive. The youngest learners explored his story through animated videos, picture talks, quizzes, action games and prayer, while primary students expressed their understanding through creative activities centred on good deeds, service, holiness and virtues. The secondary section enthusiastically tested their knowledge through an inter-house quiz on the life of St. Dominic Savio, reinforcing the values he embodied.
The celebrations culminated in a Eucharistic Celebration for the Catholic community and an interfaith prayer service for students of other faiths, both centred on the school theme, "Do Whatever He Tells You – Faith in Action, Making a Difference." Through readings from different faith traditions, a thought-provoking skit and meaningful reflections, students were reminded that true greatness lies in choosing honesty, kindness and courage in everyday life.
In his homily, Rector and Manager Fr Francisco Pereira reminded everyone that faith becomes meaningful only when it is lived through generous action. Drawing inspiration from the life of St. Dominic Savio, he encouraged the school community to be cheerful, faithful in their daily duties and courageous in standing for the truth, thus becoming CEOs of peace. He challenged all to become influencers of peace by choosing goodness over evil, forgiveness over grudges, and truth without harming others.
The celebrations concluded on a joyful note with games and fellowship among the staff, bringing the entire school community together in gratitude as they renewed their commitment to live the values of St. Dominic Savio each day.
