The annual Staff Retreat of St. Dominic Savio High School was held on Wednesday, August 19, 2026. Animated by Fr Avil Correia, Vice Principal of Don Bosco, Lonavala, and a proud alumnus of our institution, the retreat centred on the theme, “Education is a Matter of the Heart.” The day offered a meaningful opportunity for reflection and appreciation of the impact educators have on the lives of their students.
The retreat commenced with an inspiring song that reminded participants of the miracles that unfold when one believes. This was followed by a lively Teacher’s Bingo activity, where staff members warmly interacted with one another to identify colleagues based on unique characteristics, setting the tone for the day’s sessions.
In the first session, Fr Correia invited the staff to reflect on thought-provoking questions: Why did you choose teaching as a profession? What brings you joy as an educator? What challenges drain your energy? What three qualities are you known for among your students? Through personal anecdotes from his own school days, Fr Correia highlighted the profound influence that mentors can have on shaping young lives. Group discussions followed providing space for meaningful conversations about the joys and challenges of the teaching vocation.
A key message that resonated throughout the session was Fr Correia’s reminder that “the primary role of an educator is to build connections and relationships with students.” This message was further reinforced through a TED Talk by renowned educator Rita Pierson. The talk underscored the importance of creating positive relationships with students and reminded teachers that meaningful learning occurs when children feel loved and understood.
The second session featured the inspiring sports drama Peaceful Warrior (2006), directed by Victor Salva. The film follows the journey of Dan Millman, a talented gymnast searching for meaning in life. Through its powerful themes of self-discovery and personal growth, the film encouraged participants to reflect on their own journeys as educators. Following a reflective discussion, all were invited to write a personal resolution as educators and place it as a symbolic brick in the collective edifice of the school.
The retreat concluded with heartfelt reflections from staff members, many of whom described the experience as enriching and inspiring. Mrs Cecilia Fernandes, a Preschool educator shared, “The retreat was a wonderful opportunity for reflection, learning and reconnecting with the true purpose and joy of being a teacher.” Another Primary educator, Mrs Bonosri Mazumdar expressed that “she felt motivated to bring out the best in every student.”
Truly, the retreat rekindled a renewed commitment to the Salesian values of compassion, and joyful service, reminding all present that education is a mission rooted in the heart. Through dialogue and shared experiences, the retreat strengthened the staff’s resolve to continue making a meaningful difference in the lives of the young people entrusted to their care.
