A series of Graded Life Skills sessions was conducted for the students of STD IX and X of St Dominic Savio High School, Andheri, between June 27 and August 25, 2026. The programme was conducted by Mr Haydn Dias, Educator and Student Motivator, and Ms Teresa Dias, the School Counsellor. Fr Francisco Pereira, the Rector and Manager, set the tone for the sessions by emphasising their importance in helping students understand themselves, make responsible choices and grow into mature and respectful individuals. The students were encouraged to participate attentively, ask questions and approach the sessions with an open mind. They were constantly reminded to seek guidance from their parents or other trusted adults, teachers or the school counsellor whenever necessary.
The three Life Skills sessions for the students of STD X were designed as a progressive exploration of adolescence, relationships, personal safety and responsible decision-making. The first session, held on June 27, built on the foundation laid during the previous year and addressed aspects of growing up, including female anatomy, virginity, menstruation and menstrual hygiene, alongside the physical changes associated with male puberty. The second session, moved towards the emotional and relational dimensions of adolescence. The students explored concepts such as friendship, infatuation, love and lust, while also receiving age-appropriate information about sexually transmitted diseases, contraception, abortion and variations in human sexuality.
The concluding session, held on August 25, focused on developing awareness about exploitation, dignity and responsible choices. Discussions addressed sensitive issues including prostitution, child pornography, the commodification and exploitation of women, sexual violence and readiness for marriage. The open Q&A that followed gave the students an opportunity to reflect on the issues discussed and seek clarification in a safe and guided environment. The sessions were particularly valuable in helping the students move beyond simply receiving information to developing greater awareness of the consequences of their choices and the importance of respect, responsibility and empathy.
The students of Standard IX participated in their Life Skills session on July 17. The session focused on male anatomy and the physical and emotional changes associated with puberty. The boys were encouraged to understand these changes as a natural part of growing up, while also being mindful of the language they use and the manner in which they treat the opposite sex.
Student feedback demonstrated the value of the programme. Several students of STDs IX and X appreciated gaining a deeper understanding of the importance of treating others with dignity and respect. Reflecting on the programme, Mast. Ross Salis remarked, “The Life Skills sessions have equipped us with valuable knowledge that will help us navigate the situations and challenges we may encounter in the future.” The sessions ultimately reinforced an important message: growing up is not merely about physical change, but about developing awareness, responsibility, empathy and respect.
