A Student Awareness Programme on Cyber Crime and Drug Abuse was conducted on August 14, 2026 by the Maharashtra Police, Police Commissionerate, Mira-Bhayandar, Vasai-Virar. Don Bosco High School and Junior College, Naigaon East, was among the schools and junior colleges that participated in the online session. The programme witnessed the participation of approximately 2,000 students from the Vasai, Virar, Naigaon, and Mira-Bhayandar regions. The session aimed to sensitise young people to the growing concerns of cybercrime, substance abuse, peer pressure, and the need for responsible and informed decision-making.
The session sensitised students to common cyber threats such as phishing, impersonation, online scams, cyberbullying, blackmail, and social media misuse. They were advised to protect their passwords, OTPs, and personal information, verify suspicious messages, avoid unknown links and requests, and report cybercrime promptly. The importance of maintaining a responsible and positive digital footprint was also emphasised.
The programme also addressed the serious consequences of drug abuse, addiction, and negative peer pressure. Students were encouraged to exercise self-control, make informed choices, and distance themselves from harmful influences. They were reminded that seeking help at an early stage is a sign of strength and that difficulties should not be concealed out of fear or embarrassment. Mr Akshay Shet, Counsellor at Mindset Wellness, emphasised the importance of recognising early warning signs and seeking timely support. Students were encouraged to approach their parents, teachers, counsellors, or other trusted adults whenever they experience pressure, bullying, blackmail, or concerns related to substance abuse.
Dr Nilesh further explained the far-reaching effects of substance abuse on a person's mental well-being, judgement, education, relationships, and future prospects. He introduced students to the practical “5D” approach as a strategy for managing stress, negative thoughts, and impulsive reactions:
The 5D Approach
Discuss – Share the problem with someone you trust.
Distract – Engage in a positive activity.
Delay – Avoid impulsive decisions.
Deep Breathe – Calm yourself through deep breathing.
Drink – Move away from a stressful situation by sipping water or have tea or coffee.
The approach encouraged students to pause, reflect, and seek appropriate support rather than allowing pressure or difficult emotions to influence their decisions.
The session concluded with the National Anthem, followed by a Vote of Thanks. Overall, the programme was informative, relevant, and thought-provoking, equipping students with practical knowledge and encouraging them to make responsible choices, protect themselves from digital and social risks, and work towards building a safe, healthy, and responsible future.
